Tufts vs uvm postbacc premed

This thread is for a discussion of the Tufts post bacc premed program and UVM post bacc premed program. These are for career changers (ie taking the core premeds).

I am in at both. I am going to go to one of them. I am doing 2 summers and one school year. Cost is essentially the same. Each has a linkage to its own med school. I prefer Boston but it wouldn't bother me to live in burlington for a year. Which one should I attend and why?

The UVM "linkage" provides for a guaranteed interview, but, according to Rooni, does not eliminate the glide year. Linkage at Tufts would eliminate the glide year. Also, tuition at Tufts, a flat $26k, is a lot cheaper than out of state tuition at UVM, which (if I read it correctly) is about $17k+ for each of fall and spring (assuming 3 classes) and another $8k+ for summer (assuming 2 classes), or about $42k for a full 4 course post-bacc (Can that be right??).

On the other hand, pretty much everyone on studentdoctor (including Rooni who is there right now) has nice things to say about UVM, while the chatter about Tufts is more mixed. Also, the UVM summer term starts later, which may be an issue if you currently are on quarters.

IMO both are a toss up, I would say you should live in the respective city that you feel more comfortable in. All this med school $hit is just rough though, don't you ever just feel like giving up? I do...sometimes I think about what my life would be like if I wasn't going to become a doctor--I probably would be just another business man trying to work up the next big ponzi scheme. Stupid. At this point I have so many friends and family counting on me that if I give up I'll just look like a huge pu$$y.

Looks like tufts offers guaranteed interview at tufts med if your postbacc gpa is 3.3 or higher. Any idea on stats of people who are accepted from the program?

Rooni, you have made this point over and over. If you are done commenting that is fine. I am really looking for more info on TUFTS. Specifically about linkage stories. I am also interested in ANY info on tufts as there is next to none available, aside from what is listed on their website, which I do not need regurgitated. Just looking to connect with some people who have attended the program and would be willing to share first hand experiences.

hey-o, I'm actually going to the tufts post-bacc premed this year starting this summer (I early accepted back in Feb). And the other school I was choosing between was UVM. I choose tufts for a few reasons.

1 yes uvm is a similar costs, so toss out that reason.
2 i hear Burlington is beautiful, but it is a small town, thats all I've ever lived, so I wanted a change.
3 Also tufts has a great rep, like ~95 get accepted to a med school after (uvm ~90 so perhaps splitting hairs there).
4 But between the areas, it seems that tufts (the surrounding areas, including cambridge and greater boston area) has so many health service opportunities and such a great concentration of medical academics and research going on that you would have a lot to choose from.
5 regarding the linkages its all on the website (http://uss.tufts.edu/undergradEducation/academics/postbac/application.asp) but for allopathic schools tufts has Tufts med and BU.
6 the last thing that I've found is that the advisors are very supportive there and I have asked them numerous questions and they also respond in detail, not some token email response.

FYI, if you have been accepted to Tufts they have an open house coming up so you should have received notice about that. it could help in your decision.

sorry to revive an old thread, but just curious - what were your stats like when you applied for the tufts post bac program? Like, your gpa, volunteer experience, and sat or gre? thanks!
