Hi,.. my parents are starting to ask me how much should they expect to be paying for dental school each year (assuming I get in).. and i dont know what to tell them. I know that the tuition ranges from 50000 to 70000 a year assuming no instate tuition. Do people usually get loans to cover all the 50000 and rent and stuff.. .or do they get loans for part of it... any input would be good. Thanks.

whoh....ive read that almost all schools have tuition, books, instruments, housing, and living costs in the range of 20,000 to 60,000. How u got 50K to 70K for tuition.......hmmmm

It depends on where you get accepted. If you go to BU, you're looking at about 70k. Other than that, it will be cheaper.

Keep in mind that tuition is different than the total cost of attending a school. Tuition ranges from ~10k for instate all the way to ~45k for private schools (USC, U Penn, etc.). There is also the cost of instruments, books, and living expenses (which will vary from school to school - living in San Francisco will be sky high compared to Omaha, for example) to consider as well. A lot of schools have such costs categorized and listed in their information packets or online. At every interview I have been at there has been some sort of discussion of costs and financial aid. You can look this information up and/or take it home for your parents to look over.

also u can only borrow upto 38500 from gov. for student loans in healthcare. rest will be high intrest private loans and they will screw u good esp., if u dont have a really good credit history like many college students.

Far from the truth my friend. All of my private loans are 1% below prime....so currently at 3.25%. My gov't loan is around 2.8%

I didnt mean just the tuition.. sorry. I mean the total cost of everything like books, and housing etc.. which schools are as low as 20000?.. that could only be if you are going to a state school.. the rest of the schools are much more. Anyway, so do people find loans that will cover all the costs ?

How am I going to pay for school (assuming I get in) ? Well, count me in for zero from parents, zero from savings. They better have loans or I'll be moonlighting at Starbucks after class! You are very lucky your parents are willing to help!

I am one of 8 kids 🙂 ... i dont think i get to monopolize on the funds..

It's very possible (a large chunk of dental students are financing their education through loans, so you will certainly not be alone) and the financial aid department at your (future) school will now the ropes and help you get everything sorted out.

Loans will be the chief fund for most applicants payments needs. Count yourself lucky, I will have to break my dad's are just to get him to fork over his SSN so I can get a better interest rate on a graduate loan he will never have to pay. So having helpful parents is a blessing in disguise... Trust me I know.

tell me more about these low interest private loans. i am trying to figure out this whole financial aid thing, and i know i am going to need around 10k more per year than government loans, my savings, and summer jobs are going to cover. what are some of the more common and good private loans out there?

MY PARENTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Man come on! Don't you think YOU should be paying for dental schoool? I have friends whose parents are loaded yet refuse to pay for their childs grad school. There comes a time when one is an adult and needs to pay their own way. Tell your parents this...Mom...Dad...I appreciate your interest in helping me with tuition. However, your debt to me has been fulfilled. By paying my way through prep school and college you have given me a gift that less than 1% of the population is fortunate enough to receive. I am now an adult and I take responsibility for my education. Dental school is on me. Take the 200 G's an spend it on yourselves.

I got the financial aid questionnaire from Michigan and it asks for parent's financial information. Will what I put affect my chances of getting financial aid from the school, even if I am paying for it myself?

I dont see anything wrong with taking money where it is offered. For some parents it is their dream as much as ours to make it through grad school. If I was lucky enough to have financially well off parents I would take full advantage. I guess its the abuse of this privelege that gets to me sometimes.

Considering there is an inflation (10-15%) every year applied to Total Cost of Dental Schools... how much will it cost to attend a dental school with a price tag of $70K right now in 5 yrs? 🙂

That's a little harsh. But I also believe we should pay for our own school expense, esp grad school. I have paid for all my college expenses. My parents love to cover it for me, but I just can not accept it. When you become a parent, you will know how hard it is to raise a child and realize that you had asked way too much when you were little.

the financial aid form from michigan is just their way of giving you an estimate of how much aid you can expect to recieve from federal programs if you went to their school. the financial aid office looks at all the figures, determines what they think you will probably be eligible for, and gives you a nice report page at the end of your interview. they seemed really nice and helpful. anyways that information you send them is not official and does not affect your actual aid. the official determination will be done based on your FAFSA information and after you get accepted somewhere. about the parental information, that does not affect your federal direct loans but is used to determine your need for a couple of the other loans like the health professions loan and perkins loan. i am not sure why the government assumes parental contribution when determining these two loans.

With interest rates on student loans at an all-time low (2.77%) NOT taking out loans is crazy, it's the cheapest money you'll probably ever have access to. I think the limit for federal student loans for Health Professionals was increased to around 200k (including any undergrad loans you might already have), this is above what most students will need if attending a state school. Dental students attending a more expensive private school might require an additional 100k from private lenders, but current interest rates on these loans are very low as well.

The smart thing to do is to consolidate your loans as soon as you get them and lock into the lowest possible interest rate for repayment At this time the interest rate can only go in one direction...up, and while $250k at 3.0% might be managable, at 8.25% it's damn scary...
