Hey! Does anyone know what the current tuition at NYCOM is? I can't find it on their site. I look on AACOM's site and it was just under 38,000, but I thought someone had previously posted that it was higher. Thanks!

At the open house the fin aid lady said it was $40k and each year it goes up. The cost of attending was around $63k/yr increasing each year.

The 63,000 is with other expenses? What do you mean it keeps going up? 😱 40,000 is already a lot. How much more does it go up? Thanks!

Cost of attending is with living expenses and all. From what I remember she said the tuition will go from like $40 to $43k and each year it varies.

Tuition by itself is around 37K, but if you include everything else, like food, books, and other things its around 43k, and it can go up a little every year.

The 62K people are giving you is the estimated cost of living for tuition, books, housing, utility bills, etc. In other words, its everything you need, and its 62K for the first year, but it will increase each year more and more. Therefore, your looking at a minimum of 250,000 in fees.

Here is the link, it shows you average debt for graduating medical students DO/MD. Please note this is for 2005 figures, so expect higher values now, obviously.

Found it!!! ---> http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/grad/webextras/brief/sb_med_debt_brief.php

Tuition / fees comes to over $40k/year and increases about 6-8%/year. Total including living expenses came to like $62k this year. 😱 NYCOM tuition is not for the faint of heart. If you're planning on specializing (only 45% of graduates go into primary care) you should have no problem paying back the loans. If you are planning on going into primary care, you can sign up for tuition repayment programs. They even offered a primary care tuition program to us at first year now, but you have to sign to promise to go into primary care.

The main point is, go where you are going to be be happiest and do well. If you get into a cheaper school that is more focused on primary care(I know you are interested in that doctormom) and the school fits better, go there. There is no harm in interviewing at NYCOM and seeing how you like it though 🙂 Our school only does 6 weeks family practice rotation, while we do 12 weeks in surgery, so you can see where the focus is.

Thank you so much for the helpful info. I definitely want to go into rural family medicine, which is why I felt that NYCOM was not the place for me. DeBusk is also only 30,000 and I think PCSOM is only 28,000 plus the tuition at Pikeville includs your lapbook, text books,test fees, etc. Both the areas around the schools have a really low cost of living as well. You literally can rent a four bedroom house for $400 for buy one for $60,000. The areas are very poor and have a median income somewhere around $18,000 which is the reason for the low cost of living. As of this moment I am going to my NYCOM interview so that I can compare it to the other two schools, but I sincerely doubt that I would have much interest in it for a number of reasons. I have heard wonderful things about it and I know that it is a good school, but it doesn't fit in with what I am looking for. I truly appreciate all the very insightful feedback from everyone. 😀 :luck:

:scared: I know people that paid more for their CARS!! 😱
Definitely go to the interview, DoctorMom. It is great to compare schools & gives you a better context with which to make up your mind later, should you be fortunate enough to get to choose!
I love the 12 weeks of surgery thing... COOL!

LOL!!! The Appalachian region is very poor, but the people are wonderful. I have family down there and I know how desperately the region needs some quality doctors. The only reason I am going to the interview is to compare schools, although I suppose it is possible that I might fall in love with the school. The twelve weeks of surgery FREAKS me out!!! I have REALLY bad fine motor skills and if I became a surgeon I would probably get sued the day I started practicing because I would completely screw up the surgery. So, that is actually one more con to NYCOM for me. But, we need doctors of all kinds. You can do your surgery and I will go live in the middle of nowhere, practice family medicine, and get paid in chickens.😉 Thanks for the comments!😀
