Tulane ACP

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is the class size still about 15 people?

I believe so. I think they accept 15, then lose a few to waitlists at other med schools. I've been tol that for the past few years the ACP class size ranges from 12-15.

Hmm...so that comes out to 25% of the applicants will get in, possibly a little more due to applicants getting pulled off the waitlists. That number is not too shabby considering 94% of ACP grads get into Tulane Med. :xf:

Good luck to all.

When will we be notified of the final decisions? Do they notify us by email or regular mail?

They're meeting Monday morning to make decisions. I believe you will be notified via e-mail.

Swimchick is right. I had the same question because I recently relocated for a summer research job, so I contacted Ms. Dawsey in the ACP office with the same question. She said that emails would be sent initially, along with something in the mail afterward. This lines up with the letter I received after submitting my application, saying all applicants would be notified of their status via US mail by June 15th.

Good luck to everyone!

So the ACP committee met this morning?

Guess I spoke too soon on the last post. Just got my e-mail with the decision....I'm in!!!!

Me too. Hmmm, what to do, what to do.

Wow! Congrats, guys. I'm so jealous!

Haven't received anything yet so I guess I'm waiting for the sad email.

The question you need to ask yourself: Norfolk, VA or New Orleans, LA 😉

That, and the ~$12,000 difference in cost.

Oh I'm on an existential bender over this, no worries.

Can we do a quick review of financial aid options? It's my understanding that there's no federal or school support for the ACP, so it's private lending all the way. Lots of private lenders are out of business. I'm seeing private loan options at Sallie Mae, BofA, and Wells Fargo. Most of the programs require the money to go through the school's financial aid office (so that they're handling verification etc.), which seems like a non-problem.

Dang, I'm on a plane to Norfolk in a week to look for housing. Tick tock tick tock.

Are you planning to mention ACP in your AMCAS app? If so, how/where are you going to mention it?

I thought about listing it in the course work section...but I don't know if that would cause any problems in the verification process.

I called Ms. Dawsey a couple months ago about financing and she said that because ACP isn't a degree-granting program, normal educational loans aren't available. Instead, she said students who do borrow in order to attend often use a "continuing education" loan. Rates are based on "credit worthiness" but even if the rates suck, it can't possibly cost the ~$24k EVMS charges for their program.

Example at Sallie Mae: http://www.salliemae.com/get_student_loan/find_student_loan/training_loans/continuing_ed/

As far as listing coursework in AMCAS, it shouldn't cause a problem. You have the option of saying you're taking courses at an institution but not requiring that transcripts be sent in order for your app to be verified. I did just that this year when I was at the Drexel IMS program.

Thanks for the info!

I am so disappointed.

What do you mean? Did you get the rejection email?

I still have nothing!

Although I received the receipt for my app fee payment, my online banking account shows that the check has not yet been cashed. 😕 I hope that my app was at least looked at.

No e-mail but I am assuming a rejection. My check was not cashed either.

Congrats to everyone that got accepted!!!

Congrats!

And I definitely understand...after 2 cycles of disappointment, I really needed this boost!

I <3 Tulane....for giving me my first job out of college and a shot at going to med school 😀

Nope, can't use that one. I think Sallie Mae is out - if it's not degree-seeking or on a pre-approved list, they don't do it. I'm going to look at normal banks next.

Edit: found a directory here, looks like it's actually current! http://www.finaid.org/loans/privatestudentloans.phtml

Yeah...Sallie Mae is out. Tulane isn't on their pre-approved list :wtf:

Wells Fargo wants me to get a cosigner...if that doesn't work I'll have to try my bank 🙁

Swimchick, TyrKinase, DrMidlife, and mohawker2000,

Have your checks been cashed? I'm just hoping that my application was at least reviewed. Still no news today. 🙁

My check cleared the bank on 5/21

Thanks.

Just called the office and Shannon claims that she doesn't have the decisions yet and will be emailing everyone today at some point 😕 Confuzzled? Yes.

That's weird that they didn't cash our checks. Maybe the acceptance e-mails are sent from someone else?

Did most of you have email correspondence with Dawsey? According to the application guidelines, it states that everyone will be notified of their decision of either acceptance, waitlist, or rejection by MAIL (not necessarily email) by June 15. I never had any correspondence with the office via email.

I did not receive the e-mail acceptance, but I did receive an e-mail from Ms. Dawsey that she had all of the materials for my application. This was after I left a message asking for a confirmation.

Same here. Still have my fingers crossed.

hahaha...I assure you, my acceptance is real 😉

Please don't get me wrong, I never doubted that. I just find it strange that Shannon is claiming that the decision has yet to be made known.

Just sounds like a communication break-down somewhere.

Anyways, I am assuming a rejection at this point ... unless those accepted get off their wait-lists ! 😳)

That is weird, given that all decisions were made yesterday. I walked by the office a little while ago and she's hard at work finishing up the letters 🙂

I wonder if maybe the decisions were given alphabetically😕

So swimchick says letters and mr2trd3 says e-mail. Oh boy!

Hello! First time poster. I haven't heard from them as well. However, my check was cashed on 5/1.

hehehe, now it makes sense!

You guys should make a facebook group.

When an admissions office is dealing with phone calls from bazillions of students who want to know their status, and it's only been 24 hours since the first acceptances went out, they're going to use a canned response. Which has nothing to do with you as a unique individual, and which they'll keep using, not to be malicious, but because the live status of any given applicant is NOT available to the people answering the phone. And even if it is available, it's really not the job of the $12/hr phone answerer to deliver the news. That's what the $150k dean of admissions, really, gets paid to do. If the $12/hr phone answerer does it "wrong" then it can turn into a legal fiasco or dried up alumni donations or what have you. By contrast, whatever committee is between you and an acceptance or a rejection wants to hold onto good applicants as long as possible, without having room for them all. And with only 15 seats in the program, that's 10x more intense than the average med school class.

I say this as an applicant rejected by 40 medical schools, who feels your pain. When you're communicating with people involved in med school or SMP admissions, assume they're feeding you a line. And don't get all pissy about it: this is the way the world works and you'll be doing it too soon enough. When you occasionally get a decision maker who is honest and forthright with you, enjoy it, that's a rare and precious thing.

Again, please don't misunderstand me (read: make assumptions about) me. No one is pissed here, just looking for some clarification. I hope that that isn't a sin here 🙂

I'm sorry you got the impression I was talking to/about you in particular. I wasn't.

Uhhh, does that mean it was directed at me, as I am the only other presumed reject here?

I do understand what you are saying and agree, I did not call the office to ask about acceptances.

Oops! Sorry, didn't know who that was directed towards. If not me, then probably at Giggles. It's hard to convey emotions with written/typed words, but I'm saying this with no sarcasm or attitude. Anyway, still an unnecessary rant.

Congrats to all who were accepted though. I'm sure you all will do well and enjoy the program very much.

heh, you're off the hook mr2trd3.

I wish I knew what I said to set that in motion?

Sigh. No, I wasn't trying to pick on anybody in particular, just striking pre-emptively. Over the last 2.5 years on SDN, I've seen 57 bazillion posts, especially in May and June, that can be summarized as follows:
"I called the admissions office to find out X and they won't tell me anything useful but they said Y which I know isn't true because on SDN somebody said Z and IT'S ALL JUST SO UNFAIR."
Or,
"my dad golfs with the dean of school A so I know FOR SURE that I'm only on the waitlist at school B because there's a DaVinci Code plot against me."

I should just keep my mouth shut, as usual.

Meanwhile, Chase just closed its private loan program. As in since yesterday. D'oh.
