As for housing, I'd like to live some place cheap, but that might mean a bike ride or long walk away. Are either possible with hurricanes coming by every couple of days? I do have an inflatable boat...jk. But seriously, is it muggy and rainy all the time?

You could find housing uptown and take the uptown/downtown shuttle to campus. That way you won't have to walk a lot or ride a bike across town. I haven't used the cross town shuttle but a fair number of med and ACP students take it daily.

The summer months are generally wet (afternoon rain storms are common, but usually only last for <1 hour) and hot (>90F).

They say that this hurricane season is especially bad. As far as I know it hurricanes are like rainstorms on steroids.

I've yet to experience a hurricane but my friends who've lived here for years claim that the national weather service always says that the upcoming season will be bad. It's just a matter of being prepared and having a plan if you need to evacuate. Tulane looks out for it's own so I wouldn't worry about it. If you've lived in California or other states affected by earthquakes, you already know the drill: have bottled water, flashlight and plans to contact people outside the area if you're required to leave.

If it's any consolation, most Tulane students refer to hurricane evacuations as "hurrications": impromptu breaks from school that usually turn out to not be disastrous for the city, while allowing you and your friends to go do something fun outside of New Orleans for two or three days.

I'm afraid I don't have any details about that, but in years past there has always been some amount of movement on the alternate list. It's a hard wait, but I would remain optimistic at this point in the summer.

It seems that from the previous threads usually 1-5 people get off the list. People on the WL are also getting off their WL for med school so stay hopeful!

I think you have a good shot at getting into the program!

I would much rather be in a hurricane than an earthquake.

Hurricanes you get a warning especially with the bad ones you can see them brewing out in the ocean. Earthquakes you get no warning which sucks. One moment you are watching TV the next you are being tossed around like a bug in a bottle.

It's not the nicest place in the city...but you can't beat the convenience 🙂

I had a bunch of friends who lived there and their biggest complaints were about mold and cockroaches. Most of them bought a dehumidifier and that solved the mold problem.

Deming is good if you're unfamiliar with New Orleans, lack a car or other reliable method of transportation to the med school and/or lack time to do an apartment search before coming here.

That's funny because a my friend told me when she visited New Orleans there were very large cockroaches OOoooo that is kind of creepy....

Haven't withdrawn yet, I'm waiting for my packet from Wayne! Will withdraw as soon as I get it. It's kind of this paranoia that they changed their minds or something.

The insects in New Orleans are much larger than your average bug. I'd never seen a cockroach until I moved here and nearly had a heart attack when I saw it.

The other day I saw a dragonfly that was bigger than my hand and sounded like a helicopter...I kid you not. It was the first time I'd ever heard my mother scream!

I am a guy, but I still would rather not deal with mold or cockroaches. Do you know any nice apartments that are within convenient (10-15mins) driving distance? Since I've never been to NO and am not familiar with the area around the school, I'd be willing to spend a little more money to get in a nicer apartment in a location that is maybe a little more forgiving in terms of making wrong turns into unsafe areas.

haha...I hope I didn't paint a terrible image of New Orleans. There are a lot of affordable, nice places that are in safe neighborhoods. It just so happens that some real estate developers built a very nice apartment complex next to the projects. Although, in fairness, I do believe that public housing complex was supposed to be demolished after Katrina and it never happened.

1. Beat the T1 average in anatomy and histology (but anatomy matters most).
2. Don't be a jerk to students, faculty or staff.
3. Have a good interview (if you weren't previously interviewed and waitlisted at Tulane).

You get credit for anatomy, histo and neuro (if you take it) however, as I understand it, the grades won't count toward your class ranking (important for things like AOA, etc.).

I believe anatomy and histo were done just P, conditional pass and F. Not sure about the other classes.

I'm not a huge fan of the tap water in New Orleans, but it is safe to drink. I grew up on well water (yay Upstate NY) and I've noticed a difference...but I use a Brita filter down here and it works fine for me.

So it looks like my loan fell through: In order to get the loan I need proof of enrollment, in order to be enrolled i need to have the money...how did you guys finance this? It looks like I might have to withdraw last minute. I tried to get a letter from Shannon and that was rejected. UGH...help someone.

What loan company are you going through? I used Wells Fargo and they accepted a letter from Shannon as proof of my enrollment in the program.

That's exactly who I used and it was rejected. They told me that the letter states that I was accepted, but not that I am enrolled. Technically that's true, I'm not really enrolled until I hand them a check for the money I don't have during registration.

currently reworking my application for the wells fargo edu connection loan...

did anyone also select the "MedCap Alternative Loan for health professionals" ? that came up on the application for the previously mentioned lender and I'm not sure whether to split my loan money between these two types of loans or just go for the education connection loan

thanks swim but she told me that she used the same letter that they've used all other years without problem. so i think what she sent me was prolly the same letter that you have. SIGH...I wanna go here so bad! its not fair if I have to withdraw. Not to mention the fact that I stupidly got a room in Deming today, meaning now I'm stuck with their payments too....

on a new note!, anyone else living in Deming??? twould be awesome (if my loan went through) if we end up in the same building...ya'll can come kill zombies with me!! (L4D2 and such ahah...my therapeutic passtime when not studying)
