Tulane or state school?

If you think you're interested in emergency medicine, would attending Tulane SOM vs. a no-name state school give you a big advantage for residencies? As in a big enough advantage to justify paying 2x tuition?

In a word- No....

Your medical education is dependent upon one person--- you. You can get an excellent education at a state school or a terrible education at a fancy private school... its all dependent on you.

My residency class had only one person from a private school...the only difference between his education and mine... I owe 100k he owes 250k.

I agree completely with EMRaiden. An MD is an MD is an MD, wherever or however you earn it. From that perspective, when the time to apply for residency comes in fourth year, you will most likely do an away rotation in EM somewhere for a letter of recommendation. This would be the only time that "name" might make a difference. 1 month out of your four years is really all that matters as far as location or "name" is concerned IMHO.

Tulane is a mid-tier school and probably has no significant difference in prestige then your state school. The only schools that may be *worth* the money are the top 5-10 schools IMO. Even then, it still comes down to individual preference and career goals. I wouldn't base your med school decision on where it would be best to go to for EM too, since your specialty choice will probably change several times during med school.

Ditto with everyone.

My choice came down to a top 5 school and a middle to bottem tier state school that gave me a whooping scholarship. I saved 35 Grand a year at the state school and am getting the kind of interviews that I want.

If you are a stud, it wont matter wherever you go.
