Thank you for reading this topic.....

I have few In-Needed questions hope anyone share your knowledge or past experiences...

1~what is this one year master of Science program like? I visited the website but wish to heard from past students' experiences....

2~Courses analysis? how to approach both the studying strategy and thesis requirement?

3~where to live is CLOSE and SAVE around the campus?

4~from my caring parents, is New Orleans save to live NOW? i mean the Natural Disaster of Hurricane?

I sincerely thank you for being considerate and patience.

It's a small program that isn't active on SDN - but I know someone that had a family member get into their MD program through the MS program as an out-of-stater. It's a good program if you don't have an MCAT.

1) I just completed the pharm program and will be attending Tulane med this fall and would highly recommend the program. While it required a LOT of memorization, I found it really rewarding to spend this year learning about a topic that will be relevant in almost any medical field I enter.

2) As far as the courses, the main one (read: the make or break one) is Medical Pharmacology. This is your direct comparison to the Tulane 2nd years. In your graduate letters of recommendation the professors generally include your average in this class as well as the med student average to show how you stack up. If you dont beat their curve you're probably not in good position to gain acceptance in Tulane...but thats a generalization. EITHER way, Med Pharm was really easy if you just spent time on it. Most of it wasnt too challenging.

The other classes in the program were harder in my opinion but they dont matter as much. Just work a week ahead of time and memorize as much of the information that the professors indicated was important and you should be fine. Almost every single lecture has learning objectives so that usually makes extremely clear what you need to know and study for the test.

3) As far as living situation, the above poster has it wrong. The med school (and this program) do not happen uptown. Its all downtown. As a result, there arent too many places to live that are convenient besides the Tulane Med/Graduate housing called Deming Pavilion. Since your schedule in this program is HIGHLY erratic it was nice to live in walking distance (you can actually use sky walks to get from Deming to the med school--SAFE). One thing is that since the downtown doesnt really have anything to offer you basically need a car to get anything done like grocery shopping and other random errands.

4) New Orleans isnt quite safe EVERYWHERE. I'd say that generally the downtown area has been safe. Not many people around means not much crime (this applies only to warehouse/central business district downtown). If you are wise and dont wander around alone on random dark streets you're fine (why I would never live uptown).

I just wanted to preempt the flood of PMs I may get and say that this years class had an average 3.3 GPA and 29 MCAT. I believe the cutoff is 24 MCAT.
Also, you can see this years schedule and other info at www.pharmacology.tulane.edu

Hi guys. I'm almost 99% sure that I will be going to the program. Just wondering who else out there is going.

Which program, pharmacology? Have you been accepted already?

Yeah, I've already been accepted into the pharmacology program.

yeah, im pretty sure that i will going to the pharmacology program too - i just got my acceptance a few weeks ago. besides tulane and LSU (if you're an LA resident), what other med schools are students likely to go to? are there any linkages?

Hi,

I've been accepted into both the masters in pharmacology programs at georgetown and at tulane. i'm pre-dental and am reapplying to dental schools this year. i graduated college in 2006 with 3.2 and 19 academic avg. on my DAT.

any advice?????? i'm not sure which program to choose.

No linkages I know of besides Tulane Med. Most people either go the year right after or apply for the following year.

How many kids were in your class, how many actually applied to Tulane med, and how many got into Tulane med school right after finishing the program? thanks!

DISCLAIMER: I have no actual numbers so dont hold me to this. These are my ESTIMATES. There were 30 or so students. About 25 applied. 14 or 15 got in. Then most of the others were waitlisted. The number getting in this year may have been due to the fact that Tulane increased class size by 20 so you have to take that into account, but I'd guess that 15 is probably the number that get in any given year (barring Katrina years).

wow thats not bad at all. ok, this question is going to be a lil harder to answer but feel free to take a random guess: what was the average gpa (undergrad & masters program) and mcat scores of the 14 or 15 kids that got into tulane med school? and my second question is should be super easy to answer: how far ahead of time should you sign up for housing in Deming if you want to get a room? I just submitted my application and I'm wondering if I should start looking at off-campus housing now in case I don't get a room. thanks.

Well I really have no idea about grad GPAs as I didnt really care about anyone elses performance but my one. I CAN tell you that the undergrad GPA basically doesnt matter once you enter this program (unless it was horrifically bad). What they want to see is your performance in this environment...i.e. in Med Pharm vs the T2s.

From what I can tell the MCAT average of the guys who got in was high...really high this year. For girls I believe it was a couple/few points lower. This may be just an anomaly (due to there being a number of guys with scores >30 this year including a 39, 36 and 35) but others have speculated that this is also because its harder for Tulane to recruit females to the area. Parents are generally conecerned about safety, etc. so the med school ends up accepting more F than M to get the even distribution they want.

As far as Deming, the sooner the better. Last year June was too late to get a place for August. Call them and ask what availability is like here RIGHT NOW.

For MCAT, does Tulane Med School take the best score from one sitting or
do they take the best section scores from each time you took the test. (i took it twice and got the same score, but the 2nd time one of my sections went up by 2 points while the other 2 sections went down by 1 point each).

They'll take the most recent score. They are all about improvement trends here...so if you're still not 30+ I'd still shoot for a retake.

thanks rollwave11 - that helps clarify a lot about the program!

does anyone know if deming has a meal plan? if not, where do u get one from or is it not available for students in the pharm masters program?

No meal plan. There is a cafeteria in the med school thats open from 7am to 2pm. Other than that you're on your own down here.

for those in the pharmacology program who were waitlisted, what else can be done with the degree?

Some do ACP, others got research jobs at labs arorund the country, and I think a few are looking to do Pharma sales for a year or two.
