Turning down interviews?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I''ve turned down interviews to Temple and Nova. I just can't afford to interview at more schools.

I had an interview at Nova (all the way across country) but it was my first and wasn't gonna turn it down just in case.
I also have another interview scheduled.
I got an invite from NYU, but it wasn't in any of my top choices, so I will probably turn them down but haven't yet.

Don't you guys think it is a bit rash to turn down interviews this early? You never know if another interview you felt you nailed could still result in a rejection.:scared:

It would definately be dumb to turn down an interview if you only had one or two others. If you have enough other interviews to reasonably assume you will get in, then I don't think there is any harm in turning down excess interviews. Has anybody tried scheduling excess interviews for after Dec. 1st as a back-up?

Case invited me first, but after 7 other interview invitations, i turned them down. They said I could call them any time to reschedule, so just in case (no pun intended) they're still an option

If you can't afford it, you simply can't afford it.

However, even if it's just a backup school I think the interview experience is likely a valuable one. Not to mention you get a better understanding of what dental schools are like so you can compare with others you are interviewing at.

I turned down Temple because I had 5 other interviews beforehand and I decided to hold out for the 5 other schools I am waiting to hear back from. I kinda wish I just scheduled the interview just in case and then cancelled it if I heard from other schools but too late for that now.

i have a lot of interviews in october and the schedule is hectic. I wanted to reject some interviews but im not taking any chances till after i get an acceptance to 1 school at least if im lucky enough.

I'm unfortunate enough to have received back 50% of my AADSAS application fees. Yet I can still go to most of my interviews because 1) I have yet stayed in a hotel after 6 interviews; 2) I traveled by ground instead of air between neighboring states (e.g. PA & NY; I live in the south). Sorry if I may have sounded a bit pompous to some, but my point is that I'd try and think of ways to save money and schedule interviews accordingly.

I know there are plenty of people on this network that will most likely get into whatever school they want, but that is not the case for some of us. I would be realy careful to turn down any interviews because you never know what can happen. Plus, it is good to see the good and bad of schools, because all schools are different and you need to find that school that will be the best fit. Plus if you are really competitive you can most likely get some type of scholarship if you know how to work the system. I understand if you just run out of money, but these interviews are investments for your future, and unless you really have no desire to go to some back up school you applied to then I would be careful in who you turn down for an interview.

Agreed. Also, you never know if you'll end up falling in love with your back up schools. Going to your interviews if you can afford it will give you a broader perspective of your dental school possibilities. 😀
