Am I crazy for turning down a Northwestern interview invite? I've already gotten in at USC and UCI (which are both near home) and I really want to stay in California so I don't really see a point in spending $$ to go.

Is there anybody who cares to agree or disagree?

I agree then. If you're all set on staying in your home state, no sense in spending the money to go to Chicago. The only reason I'd take that offer is if I really just wanted to visit Chicago sometime, this would be a good excuse to get out there.

I'm doing the same thing with Stanford, actually. If I found out sometime this month that I got into one of the NYC schools, I'd probably cancel that interview.

there are quite a few people in my class who turned down acceptances to usc. there are also a few who turned down offers to uci. there is one who turned down offers to ucsd, ucla and uci.

if u don't have issues with the cold then NU is a great place to be.

its worth a look IMO.

if you have an interest in living in chicago, you should check it out. otherwise, i say don't bother.

I turned down an interview invite at Northwestern for similar reasons. I say go with what you think, you don't need other people's opinions on things like this.

yeah...i had this same dilemma...(a few diff schools for a few diff reasons) and i felt weird and like an idiot turning down an interview from nu but if you know youll be happier somewhere else, are lucky enough to have an acceptance from that somewhere else, then dont bother and go do something fun with that 3-400 bucks you save... just my 2 cents.

i interviewed at NU before i found out i got into usc. once i found out i got into usc, i turned down my nyu interview tho. there are certainly people who turn down midwest and east coast schools to stay on the west coast. i decided on usc over NU and pitt.

if you can't see yourself leaving cali at all, don't go to the interview. however, i should let you know that NU is in a really nice part of chicago and its got a sweet, new hospital. if that makes any difference to you at all, go check it out.

word...NU is nice. the hospital is the ritz carlton.

i guess i'd echo what everyone else is saying. if your heart is set on staying in cali at all costs then it probably wouuldn't be worth coming out here because you wouldnt be swayed anyways. However, if you are open to the idea of actually leaving california then NU is a great place. Chicago is a great city to be in as well. don't get me wrong. i love cali. can't wait for break and hopefully will get to do residency there. but there are other nice places to be in in the United States.

But from the sound of your initial post it seems as if you have already made your decision to stay in cali and you are just looking for "feel good" posts regarding your decision.

Good luck either way.

I'd say go to the interview. NU and USC are 2 really different schools and you might fit in at one versus the other. I think the breakdown of people who went to one school or the other who got into both was like 50% last year.

But if you know 100% your goal is to stay in California, you will most likely get a better residency in california (at your home school) if you go to USC or UCI.
