First time SDN poster here! I had the opportunity to TA for a course this past semester, which made me more interested in potentially tutoring. My question is whether I should tutor children from grades 3-8 in my local community, or tutor students athletes at my university? I really want to help out everyone, but I do not have that much free time on my hands since I am also doing research in the spring.

Are you looking for a paid or volunteer position? In what discipline would you tutor athletes?

If volunteer, ask yourself if either gig would be "serving those in need or with poor monetary resources," or if youd be serving those who are not like yourself, which would be your first choice, for med school application purposes.

Thanks for the response! They would both be volunteer positions. I would be tutoring athletes in which ever course they are having trouble in. As a psychology major, it would mostly be psychology classes. I will more than likely end up tutoring kids in my local community!

You might consider tutoring through a community center that serves ESL adults and/or their children or seeking out a school with a dominant minority population. Not to say that any volunteer teaching activity isn't laudable, but if you have a choice, some teaching experiences resonate more with adcomms.
