how do you all feel about medical students creating twitter usernames with their name and MD (ie. johnsmithMD) and using it as their primary twitter account. This may not really be important at all, but ive been seeing a lot of medical students that have done this. Should they wait until they are actually MDs or do you think its ok to use so they can start creating a web presence early?

I wouldn't say MD until you are an MD. You're a med student...just my 2cents.

On a similar note, I wouldn't use Twitter unless I was under 13 years old.

..why?
Soo many physicians and hospitals are starting to get into social media and twitter especially.

I use twitter as a news aggregator kind of like google news with RSS feeds. Its a nice tool for quick information when you're usually on the go.

Because the only thing cooler than being hip is being against whatever's hip...

Twitter is a ridiculously inefficient, awkward, and self-aggrandizing form of social media (although the latter could be said of just about any form of social media, I suppose).

Twitter is terrible.

Who cares?
Giving yourself a title on a social media platform means nothing so i really dont care what anyone call themselves

No.....no i'm pretty sure its b/c twitter is the one of the dumbest thing that was ever created. Altho, it might also be.....no, yea thats right.

Then don't use it. I don't use it or care for it but I don't go around telling people its stupid

I've seen a few medical students do it and it doesn't bother me. Mine doesn't use MD, though. I'm honestly not sure if people would be put off by it. Actually, as a physician, I don't plan to use "MD" in the handle anyway, so maybe my opinion is biased?

Also, Twitter can be a very useful networking tool if you use it correctly.

Thats pretty lame. For one, they aren't MDs yet. So thats really pretentious. (I am helping my soon to be PD on a book chapter and I didn't even put MD after my name on that, he added it but it just looks wrong)

And second, even when they are MDs who cares? Titles are so annoying. The people who put MD in their twitter are going to be the ones who correct small children who call them Mr. X ("No its Dr. X 🙄)

i agree with your first point but not so much the second. Once you are a doctor, having a twitter name with MD could be useful because it helps give your social media voice some credibility. If i am following a physician on twitter, for some reason i think i would feel more comfortable if they are tweeting healthcare tips etc with a name like JohnSmithMD than just johnsmith. just my opinion.

The fact that any Tom, Dick and Harry can put MD after their name on Twitter should completely dissuade you from feeling more comfortable with tips from someone named JohnSmishMD unless you have solid evidence that they are an MD and an expert in the field about which they are providing tips. Just because Dr. Phil puts Dr. in front of his name while my nationally and internationally renowned expert in his field preceptor introduces himself as Jim doesn't make Phil credible or Jim less credible, but our inherent biases are exactly what Dr. Phil and his ilk are playing on.

As far as Twitter and/or pretentious med students... 😴

Come on...this is as bad as the docs who put "MD" or "Doctor"on their license plates. Unless it is a work related twitter account , then why do ppl need to feel that the whole world and their mother needs to know they are a doctor.

If you start getting your medical advice from Twitter, then perhaps there is an issue. More with the person seeking such advice then giving it, but still.

i am referring to a work related twitter account. in this day and age, you would be surprised with how many physicians have work related twitter accounts which they use to share a lot of medical information and that number is just going to keep growing.

Lol , maybe more lifestyle advice

I made one that I am keeping inactive in order to lock down the name. I'll use it once I graduate.
