I was gunning for EM for quite a while and still like it. My back up is family. In preparation for ED I did two additional anesthesiology rotations and in the last one, at a very competitive school, fell in love with it.

I have had a number of EM interviews and a few family for backup but because anesthesiology is a late choice for me I have only two, one at my home
school and one at a very competitive program. Both of these were very late interviews and these schools pretty well know where I am at.

The two anesthesiology are going first on my list and then EM.

If all else fails and I need to get into family post-match my home program since it should have an unfilled FM slot or two post match.

This is what happens when you go through your 3rd and 4th year liking a lot of specialties. I seemed to be the odd ball compared with some who hated almost everything!

I’m Canadian so the situation for us is different as attendings if I get into anesthesiology.

Our match works very similarly to yours, but I have no idea where I will end up!

I guess my post suggests that if you like EM you might want to take a hard look at it compared to Anesthesiology. They are drawing from a similar group of students and if you like EM Anesthesia might be a match too . And don’t leave it too late!

Ok, fair enough. What I don't understand is why you did an away anesthesiology rotation if you were applying EM.

I had it as a last minute switch when I realized I wanted to do Anesthesiology. My program at home pretty well arrranged it for me.
I did it right before interviews and they gave me an interview. They know where I’m at and were pretty enthusiastic.

Family isn’t too awful a backup. I shadowed a family physician after first year and the guy seemed (with my limited range of reference) to be doing a fantastic job, in the sense that he was laser focused on the patient in front of him. All day. It gave me the idea that if you can stay focused and devote your full energy to each encounter all day you can be an excellent physician in any speciality. He is someone I would try to emulate in whatever I do.
