Two electives - One Program?

4th yr. is approaching fast and it will soon be time to sign up for electives. Is it a bad idea to sign up for two electives back to back at one hospital if I am highly interested in their EM program? Could it increase my chances of landing a spot or is it a waste? Thanks

That sounds pretty pointless. The program will either like you or they won't, an extra month won't make much of a difference. You're better off using that second month at a different program, in case your first choice doesn't like as much as you like them.

I did this. Signed up for both EM, PedsEM (2-week), and Ultrasound (2-week) at one program.

Can't see how it would help... if they didn't like you enough the first month a second month isn't going to change things and if they did like you a second month "could" cause you to wear on them or could give you the chance to not like you, either way. Aside from that, you won't get graduated responsibility so you won't be doing "more" or have higher pt responsibilities so not too sure the reason you'd want to do it. Now if you do US or Tox or some other rotation there also, that might not be a bad thing but same rules as above apply. One month is more than enough to make a good impression and 2 months is more than enough to ruin one

Some places may not let you do two rotationsl. They're auditioning students just as much as you're doing it for them. There are only so many rotation spots, so why use two on the same person?

I would be careful to not "overstay your welcome" at this program, since you are highly interested in this place.

Yeah, use your time wisely. It gets harder and harder to do away rotations (logistics, $$, etc) the more you do. Do the rotation, be a rockstar and spread the wealth; meaning spend that month at another program you are interested in. Get some exposure to other programs and ways of doing things. I gotta say, my negative experience on a rotation was one of the most important experiences I had when it came to applications and interview season. Its great to know what you like but spread your exposure out some, you may be surprised at the results.

Also other em related rotations like ultrasound and peds EM are good chances for you to go check out another program/hospital you might be interested. So if you do that in the same place you do an away EM rotation, you are missing a chance to see somewhere new.
