Hi Everyone,
I have two questions and would love some help: I am going to a D.O. school that has a pass/fail grading system. Will this hurt me in terms of obtaining a residency because most of the other D.O. schools use a grading system.

Also, I will be going to school in Ohio. Will it be a problem to get a CA residency? I heard that it is easier if you go to school in the state you want to have the res. in.

Oh, and if this helps, I am interested in either neuro, psych. or a res. that combines both.

Thanks so much in advance!
Shana

I go to an MD school with no grades, and it hasn't hurt me in getting residency interviews.

There is regionalism though. If you have ties to CA it's ok to not go to medschool in CA, they will still look favorably on you.

California has a couple of ostepathic schools: WUHS-CoOMoP and TUCOM.

As others have said, Cali is tougher than most other parts of the country if you're an 'outsider'. The degree of difficulty will vary based on your residency/career ot choice.

Regarding p/f, for allo programs, it usually does not hurt because the "dean's letter" requires stratification of each student. I don't know if DO schools follow the same guidelines for dean's letter content. For the most competitive specialties it may matter. I have a friend going into derm who had more than one conversation about p/f frustrations with derm program reps.

Try talking to people from your school headed in the direction you're interested in to help gauge your situation better, as well as looking at recent grads.

It isn't exactly as hard as you may think. In the end, it all depends on what you want to do your residency in. If its primary care related, you'll have no problem. I have a friend who just recently matched at a Family Medicine program at UCLA and he didn't feel that it was challanging at all; however if you want surgery or something more competative good luck! (In general, but especially in California). Anyways, hope that helps.
