So, I recently found out that another student from my medical school and I ranked the same program #1. He received an email from the PD saying he is in the Top 5. I didn't get that memo. I did get a "very highly" email, but it appears from other forums those emails don't mean much.

The program only takes 5 residents. I have a feeling I'm SOL on my #1 pick. Do programs take into consideration how many interns they would get from one medical school?

Or perhaps what I really wish I knew was how far down their rank list do they usually need to go?

Damn.

If you're both good applicants I couldn't see why they would worry much about being from the same school, as it ends up being more of an on paper issue. As for the second question, I have no idea and would like to know.

I don't think the program would mind having two interns from the same medical school. I've seen this happen plenty of times at various programs. We've had the same situation at our program, and this is in california where we have applicants from all over. Really, don't worry about this hurting your chances.

Now remember, just because the program only takes five residents does not mean that you're SOL if you're not in their top five. In order for that to happen, each of their top five choices would have to not match at any other program that they ranked higher than this program.

I remember the apprehensions of the days preceeding the match. Hang in there. Good luck.

I think that how far they go down the rank list varies from program to program (and probably also year to year). I think someone said that AMA's Freida site shows how many people were interviewed last year if that helps any.
I really doubt that they would let the same med school factor influence them. If it did matter, they could just as easily think "Hey we like students from this school" and want more people from there rather than wanting to make sure they don't get too many from the same place.
You can't be sure that your fellow student is even telling the truth about that top 5 email so try not to stress about it. The match results are out of your hands now. 🙂

I would think it highly unlikely for a program to have a 100% fill rate. Even the top schools don't. All that PD is doing is telling those 5 people that they are guaranteed to go to his/her program if they were to put his/her program down as #1.

Exactly. And I remember talking to the PD at your #1 program about how about half the people they match are a surprise, which I take to mean they weren't ranked at the very top and that the applicant didn't indicate top preference for the program either. So, yeah, it's out of your control, but your odds are matching can be pretty good even if you're not in the top 5. And I didn't get any email about being ranked highly by them, so they don't send them to everyone.

As for 2 applicants from the same school, I don't know, but I doubt it's a huge issue. I've heard of it coming up in super competitive fields like derm, though. Last year, two people from my school matched in a non-regional psych program, so I guess it wasn't a deterrent for that program.

Editing to ask how much you can trust what this guy says. Sharing that he got this email with you could be a tad bit braggish, which means he could be an exaggerating/lying type of person.

Thanks everyone. I also found it odd that he would tall me he got that email from the PD. I think he was just excited at the thought that we may be going to the same program and clearly was not thinking that it would be highly unlikely for both of us to get that email.

It is definitely the lack of control over this situation that is getting to me today. I will be fine tomorrow. That's what this glass of Malbec is for. 🙂

I wouldn't worry about it as much as I at least think you are worrying about it. Each program has their own way of filtering through applicants and choosing which ones they want the most. It's hard to know what that specific program's process is.

I don't think any program would turn down the opportunity to get a good resident even though there are others from the same school. I've only seen school preference when it came to fellowship. Some programs gave applicants from their own programs a leg-up against applicants from other programs, though IMHO it was only because they knew that applicant well, so they knew what they were getting. No matter how good or bad someone looks on paper, that person can be very different when you actually see them on the floor and doing the work.

I've never seen, however, any program start turning down another person because they already picked someone from the same program.

In my current intern class (only 5 of us total) we have 2 sets of 2 from the same medical school. So, yes it can and does happen.
