I have noticed that there are lots of accepted applicants who deferred at many schools. How does this effect the application cycle the following year? like let's say 10 people deferred this year at X school. Does that mean that there will be 10 fewer spots following year at X school? also why are there so many people defering?

And this might be a very stupid question but for applying for residency and the match process, does URM status still effective? just wondering.

Not sure abot the former. Although, one should keep in mind that many schools, with the exception of the super elite, usually accept about twice to twice and half again their class sizes so 10 seats ain't too bad.

In general, URM has nothing to do with residency matches. ERAS and the match is a function of scores, grades and LORs. The only possible exception I can think of is working in an underserved area, all things being equal between two candidates, I could see a black applicant be selected to work at King/Drew Hospital in Los Angeles versus a caucasian applicant.

So while URM students are given a leg up in terms of getting into elite programs like Harvard, UCLA and UCSF; they are not given any special preference in terms of competitive specialties like plastics, neurosurg or derm.
