hi
got a couple of questions:

1, does dentistry involve the finding of potential life threatening diseases? i mean can s dentist spot these diseases in their patients mouth?

2, do dentists have problems with flirtatious patients? 😳 if the patient is a bit hot do you guys notice it or get distracted by it cause they are just like erm lying there?

When I go to my dentist, she sometimes talks about a cute colleague of hers whom she seems to think is a bit more fun to go under than your run-o-the-mill dentist. Maybe after a while, you just get used to the doe-eyes and learn to focus on the task at hand

Yes - oral cancer is the obvious choice, but many other serious diseases have manifestations in the oral cavity. One example is AIDS patients often present with Kaposi's Sarcoma lesions in the mouth. Also, bacterial infections in the oral cavity, if untreated can spread via the fascial spaces leading to Ludwig's Angina and eventually to the mediastinum and/or can spread into the blood causing life threatening situations like septicemia, endocarditis, or meningitis. Of course, you are not going to be saving people's lives on a daily basis, but it is a part of the job. If you specialize to become an oral surgeon or an OMFS you will deal with life threatening disease much more often.

This can occassionally be a problem - that's why you always want a dental assistant with you. This will help keep those situations more professional and prevent you from getting into a bad situation.

thanks dentaldentist.

it is good to know that you can also help save people's lives. the bacterial infections, how would you go about treating them? by refering the patient to a doctor?

i have also heard that becasue you are seeing the patients in a clinical context then such situations shouldnt be a problem. i can see how a patient my do something to flirt with the dentist but should it be a problem for the dentist when they are professionals who see the patient as nothing more than that? i mean isnt it all clinical? thats what i have heard from some doctors about many aspects of their job. or have i misunderstood and dentists can also get caught up in this?

You can prescribe antibiotics as a dentist in order to treat bacterial infections. For serious ones you can refer to an oral surgeon so he can drain them.

Its easy to say you will see patients in only a clinical context but come on, people are people, and if a woman comes in showing off her cleavage and youre a male dentist you may have a stray eye which can lead to trouble. =P even if you dont mean to look it may be interpreted incorrectly. If youre a guy, first thing you do when you get a female patient is put the bib on her. lol. this was advice from one of our teachers. as a girl i dont think i will have to worry about this as much. =P

thanks that really helped 🙂

HELL YES!! I mean.... we have to be very professional esspecially where we put our hands in special places (the mouth of course)

dentists not only prescribe antibiotics but they are licensed to prescribe most narcotics. They have the potential to see many things in the mouth, like Vincents Stomatitis.😀

Stay away from any office relationship.
