I saw on the APA's list of accredited schools that Northeastern's Combined Counseling and School Psychology PhD program is still listed, but then when I went to the NEU site to investigate deadlines, it says as of Fall 2009, they are no longer a joint program but 2 separate ones and therefore no longer have accreditation because they cannot be eligible yet as separate entities. I have been very clearly warned to avoid non-accredited programs, but is this a unique case because it was accredited and just re-arranged itself and will probably get re-accredited when eligible? As I ask this, I realize the answer is probably NO, non-accredited schools mean what it says. I'd just appreciate someone explaining that they are not unique.

Also - if someone were to go to a clinical PsyD program and then become a school psychologist, how would that process work? Would it perhaps be an extra year of classes and an additional internship? I heard of someone who did this and am curious how they became certified for school psych coming from a clinical psyD program.

Thank you for all the help! I appreciate all past responses to other questions 🙂

1. For a program to be accredited, it has to have students in each year of the program. This means it will be 3-4 more years before the program can even apply for accreditation. My guess it it will likely be easy for them to get it, but they do have to wait.

2. Occasionally you can find Ed.S. programs that will allow you to go in with something else (usually a MA in school psych or counseling, but I'm sure a PsyD is fine too) right into the Ed.S. program. You would then have probably 1-1.5 years of courses and the internship. This would give you certification as a school psych, although you would still have a PsyD in Psychology with School Psychology certification. PhD programs require at least 2 years of coursework at the school in which you receive the degree from (and then probably the internship as well). HTHS

my clinical psych program has a number of "tracks" which are specialized classes that help you to qualify for certification. one of them is school psych. i have taken the requisite classes and done the requisite internships and all that is left for me is to take the praxis and i will be a certified school psychologist in this state.

So would you suggest someone not apply for a few years until it is accredited or think it would be fine to go and expect accreditation? Thanks!

Depends on how much of a gambler you are. 😉

Most of them will probably be accredited by the time you graduate. Some may not. Odds are in your favor, but it's still not a guarantee...
