Was wondering how many TX applicants apply in-state only. Is it even worth it to apply to schools out of state?

never limit yourself. Apply to a few D.O's and less completive OOS with relatively cheap tuition compared to other OOS schools.

I made the mistake of applying only to Texas schools and I barely got in. Definitely apply to a few out-of-state friendly schools.

Statistically you have the best shot at Texas schools as an in-state applicant but the admissions game is clearly not a purely statistical game.

I know a lot of people who only filled out AMCAS for Baylor.

Honestly, if BCM was part of AMCAS, I think many Texans wouldn't bother with AMCAS at all.

I applied only using TMDSAS this cycle. Does that mean I will be a reapplicant when I use AMCAS next cycle if I don't get in this time?

obviously compared to the tuition we are paying for instate tx: ~15k, even for baylor...the other out of state school; not only they are hard to get in, they are also charging 4 times the price...man wut a bummer...
it is good to be in texas.

yea ut houston is 12 grand a year which is freakin amazing....

i noticed the OOS less competitive schools tend to more expensive.

man, these private school with cost up to 70k a year.
to me it def worth 300k to get a MD. but the question is: how are you going to find 300k to pay for it...lol

i don't think it's worth it but you gotta do what you gotta do...and yea 80k for OOS to florida

I'd just take a year off, become a badass applicant, and reapply to Texas schools. The value for money is too great to pass up.

wow paul, just lookin at ur gpa, i am also from tamu with similar gpa. and with 39 mcat score and you cant get in ut southwestern? man ur ECs are also way better than mine.
obviously this mean there is no hope....
anyway, is tcom is rly bad school or something, i rarely seen people applying there.

No, I applied with a 30 MCAT (11PS 8VR 11BS). I got the 39 this year after I got accepted off the waitlist.

I'm disappointed. When I read the title, I thought you were asking if we TX people have an addiction to Winstar and Chocktaw casinos.

I included tcom, it's only 8. Unlike most sdners I don't discriminate against D.O schools.

1) Baylor (private)
2)TCOM
3)TAMU
4)TTU-Lubbock
5)TTU-El Paso (Paul L Foster)
6)UT-Southwestern
7)UT-San Antonio
8)UT-Houston
9)UTMB (Galveston)

that gives me nine...

Texas has 8 medical schools. 7 of those require 90% of the students to be in-state residents. (Baylor doesn't because it's a private school)

Nah, just left somebody out. We have a lot of them... If it hadn't been hammered into me by my pre-med advisor, I'd probably miscount as well. Though the comment about SDNers hating on DO is a little harsh...

DO might as well stand for Dropped Out.
(not srs)

I was gonna rip you one but then I saw the white type lol

What's the difference between MD and DO for that matter? I mean everyone says they're the same, but if they are the same why are they two different things. Serious question.

They remain separate for historical reasons, but the difference is that DO students study Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine/Technique (OMM/OMT) in addition to the basic and clinical sciences MD students pursue. The total curriculum at DO schools excluding OMM courses is regarded as an "equivalent" curriculum to that of MD schools. For practical purposes, MD = DO as far as opportunities to practice in whatever field you want with the same responsibilities, privileges, etc... There are minor differences in match rates and things (i.e. more DO's go into primary care than MD's) but overall any hating on DO students or physicians is ignorant.
