Since TX has 3 state own d-schools, do TX residents have better chances to get in than the rest of the states? If that is true, I wonder if there are people who move to TX just for the residency?

I spoke to the dental school in san antonio and dallas and YES, they do give preference to texas residents than out of state residents. If you go to predents.com you'll see a stat of how many out of state students vs. instate students. From what i hear, if you're from out of state and you're in a tx dental school, you must have been the cream of the crop choice from the pool of out of state applicants. I hope i didn't sound too mean but that's a fact.

According to Texas state law, all dental school classes must be composed of at least 90% in-state residents.

Houston has been doing 100% in state for the last several years, while Baylor allows maybe 1-2 out-of-state. I think San Antonio takes the most out-of-state at about 3-4.

Yes, people move to Texas to gain residency.

There are about 356 seats (Baylor + Houston + SanAnt) for about 762 TX applicants (06 entering class). That makes 46.7% chance for TX residents to get accepted into dschool. The percentage is way higher than any other states.

where did u get the stats from??

The figures for applicants are: Baylor 1457, SA 1051, and HOU 787. Enrollees figures are: Baylor 95, SA 96 and HOU 84 for a total of 275. Although 356 applicants were accepted only 275 were enrolled.

offical guide to dental schools by ADEA, Chapter 3, page 27, table 3-2, mid-way down.

If you are talking about the 2007 edition than you need to look at page 25 rather than 27.

so you're saying applicants, in general, are easier to get into TX dental schools than schools in other states? :\ (doesn't matter if the applicant is a TX resident or not)

but that doesn't mean there are 1457+1051+787 number of TX students applied, the majority of TX residents applied to all 3 schools for any given cycle. If there are about 7-8 hundreds TX applicants for each cycle, and about 3-4 hundreds seats designated for TX residents only, the chance is almosts 50/50.

For applicant to enrollee ratio see 06 ranking thread.

Could you plz cut and paste it here? I found the thread but not the applicants and enrollees ratio. By the way, when I said "applicants", I meant the TOTAL number of Texas applicants and not "applicants" for any particular school.

I couldn't tell how current the discussion is, but here is what I know. Texas has the 90% rule. 90% of the class must be Texas residents by law. The state funds the med schools with tax dollars and they want people who will practice in Texas.

Here is the most current data on Baylor's dental school website in regards to application stats:

http://bcd.tamhsc.edu/admissions/forms/060921/prematric0506.pdf

If you are applying from out of state you better have an outstanding application and scores. Probably most applicants would have a better chance at other schools, because some of the Texas schools are not even accepting the best out of state applicants at this point. It seems like a waste of money to apply to programs that have this type of in-state limits because you are already their second choice before you even apply.

I'm sorry if my question seems really confusing, let me try one more time...

Do you know ABOUT how many Texas applicants (TX residents) are applying to TX dschool?

I would say somewhere in the ballpark of 900 to maybe 1000. With ~1400 applying to Baylor, I would say that no more than 500 are out-of-state applicants due to the small number of non-residents accepted. This doesn't necessarily mean that all of them apply to all three schools either. I know of people who applied to Houston only, and some who applied to SA and Baylor and not Houston... so I'm sure there are many people applying to only one or two of the Texas schools because they want to stay close to home.

This might help 🙂
Keep in mind though that these numbers reflect those individuals who used the TMDSAS application service, so out-of-state applicant numbers may not be as accurate.

I have a question about TX resident status.........I was born/raised/graduated from TX........I left @ 17 to join the military, and spent (6) years enlisted........My home of record is ofcoarse TX, but before I returned home, I got married (wife is active duty Navy stationed in Southeast GA, and I am considered a military spouse), but I do plan on applying to all TX schools as a resident....

Do you think they'll still consider me a resident?? (as a mil. spouse although I will recieve my BS-Biochemistry in FL though)......

I don't think any of us is qualified to give you a definite ans. You might want to call up the 3 TX schools to find out for sure.
