I was wondering whether med schools preferred a particular type of research. For example, right now, I am torn between volunteering at two places. The first research lab mostly involves doing surgical procedures on rats (physiological processes, etc.). in other words, lots of 'wet lab' going on. The other, is more focused on data analysis and analysis of epidemiological data (nationwide statistics on cardiovascular disease risks, rates, etc. ) I don't know which one to do!!! Should i stick to the one that is more likely to produce a publication?

Stick to the one you like more. Contrary to popular belief, a publication means nothing if you can't speak about it in a passionate, knowledgeable way during your medical school interviews. This research has to be a meaningful, motivational experience for you...NOT just another line to add to your med school apps. And trust me, neither of those stands out as much as you think, and I'm sure many students have chosen either one or the other form of research multiple times with negligible effects on their overall applications.

Well, what is it? Do you want to cut siht up or analyze stuff?

Thanks for the advice algophiliac. The thing is, I enjoy both equally, so it makes it difficult to choose. Also, a kind of off track question, how important are letters of recommendation for applications?

It doesn't matter. Search feature works fantastically.

Important. Start building great relationships with anyone and everyone--and do it early. While I doubt a generic letter of recommendation will kill your application, a very good letter will definitely serve as an app boost.

Is one of the labs perhaps smaller and more cohesive? This might make getting a rec letter easier. However, the larger lab will present you with more publication opportunities. Honestly, don't focus on that when trying to find a lab...just find your "best fit." (Hands-on or hands-off? Friendly lab members or independent lab members? Time commitments? Can you see this research going somewhere...or think of any independent projects you can eventually do? etc.)

Perhaps just stick to working in both?
