Would someone be able to give me an idea of a typical day in Optometry school for a first or second year student? How many hours in class, studying, sleep, etc... Thank you very much.

Really, really, really different between schools and between students. So this is FYI.

But for the most part it's not too interesting. I'm a second year.

I get up around 7:00 on test days. Exams start at 8AM. After the exam, class starts at 9AM. I sit in lectures for the next three hours, so get out by noon. I might head down to the cafeteria and eat lunch, then get ready for my clinic shift or maybe for labs, they start at 1 or 1:30. I get out somewhere between 4 (clinic) and 5:30 (labs) and then head home. Then I'll make dinner, relax a bit, maybe pull out some stuff to study. Then start cleaning stuff up and watch an episode of something or other at 10 and be in bed by 11.

But that's just me.

I'm a first year student.

I typically am up around 6:45 a.m. every day unless I have vision screenings in the community for which I need to get up before 6:00. Class starts at 8 a.m. daily while vision screenings are at 7:00 a.m. I am in class until noon, then I have an hour lunch break which I either study during or relax. At one, classes start again. One day a week, I am done at 2 p.m. while the others are usually from 4:30 or 6:00. Thursday, I have a gap of 2 hours between classes in which I study in the library. After class, I head home, I relax a little
bit and then study. I might watch a tv show or a movie, then I am usually in bed by 10/11.

I still have some time for being social on the weekends or volunteering for VOSH. I still try to study one full day on the weekend unless I have tough exams. Then, I study all weekend. I usually have 2-4 exams per week.

I have heard that second year is more time consuming.

Any more questions, feel free to PM me.

sounds about right. do you make time for exercising or working out at all, or is that not really your thing?

No, I don't really make time for it here. There is a gym at my school, and a lot of other students use it. I go out and do things like hiking in my free time, but it isn't the same. Before, I worked on a farm and was quite active. I feel like all I do is sit now--during lectures and then studying. I have gained about 10 pounds so far, and I have lost muscle. I need more activity! Plus, it keeps your brain sharp.

I'm a first year student at berkeley.

Usually we have class everyday at 8am (that can vary depending on your lab schedule). A lot of our lecture classes are combined with a laboratory course. Usually our lectures will run between 1-2 hours (depending on the class) and our labs are usually about 2 hours. And we usually had about 4-5 lecture courses each semester. We usually are in class from 8am to 4pm but that can vary depending on your lab schedule (with breaks in between of course!). Some days will be lighter and we will just go from 8am to 12pm or 1pm but like I said that can vary too. I'm one of those that spends a lot of time Studying. I try to get at least 4+ hours everyday. But I do balance it out too with working out because I am a very health conscious too. And I just recently saw this article about sleep and I used to get 5-6 hours of sleep but now I try to get 6-8 hours of sleep now. It's a pretty interesting article that talks about how sleep loss can lead to brain damage…not cooool.

I, too, am a first year.

We have class every day from 8am- 12 pm, have an hour lunch break, then typically labs from 1-4 (or 5ish). I try to get in at least 2 hours of studying every day during the school week and typically dedicate half a day (~6-7 hours) on Saturday and Sunday. There isn't much time for other things, however, you can definitely find time to have somewhat of a social life if you're organized and don't procrastinate!

I'd liken it to undergrad, except your schedules aren't as open but are in blocks and you don't have to travel between buildings. Lots of free time in a day though to do whatever you want, whether socializing or study if you choose to. I remember studying/working way harder in undergrad than in optometry school, maybe because I didn't have to write many (2 or 3) papers in optometry school.

I just remember having a ton of time.
