Hi there! How about some details?

I go to the University of Wyoming. I am graduating with a Microbiology Major with a Minor in Mathematics. My overall GPA is 3.8 and my sGPA was 3.97. I've taken the MCAT as well, and a 35Q on the MCAT (12V, 11P, 12B).

Unfortunately I haven't done any athletics, but I have been quite involved in school activities. I did start at a community college in the state as well, so I will start there.

Very involved with student activities in general. Onto shadowing/clinicals! I've shadowed a total of 143 hours, pretty evenly split between cardio, ortho, and general practice. The first two are the fields I'm interested in, and the last one just is good practice in general.

I've also volunteered for clinical experiences several places. I've gotten a couple dozen hours at a hospital, observing in the ER and trauma type stuff. I've worked with a couple doctors at clinics, sometimes taking vitals and the like. I still have to put the hours together, but I'm sure its over 100.

ECs! I've organized 11 blood drives in college, as well as a long time blood donor myself. I've done general volunteer work at the hospital, doing things like running the front desk and working with hospice patients. Again, I still need to collect all of this data, as I have done countless little things like reading to children and all that. I've spent...a lot of time volunteering. Probably more than both shadowing and clinicals combined.

So there it is! I know the whole being from Wyoming thing hurts, but what are my chances?

Your leadership looks terrific, the shadowing is excellent. Your clinical experience as estimated is on the light side (so could you get that beefed up in the next two months?). You have some nonmedical community service, but how much isn't yet clear. Do you have any teaching (TA, tutor/coach/mentor)? What are your hobbies and artistic endeavors? Did you plan to get some research in?

I should think that your chances through WWAMI & WICHE should be decent, but your chances at private schools elsewhere in the US will be significant too.

There is room for improvement which you might keep in mind as you plan next year's activities, as update letters and interview conversations about activities that aren't on the original application can have a positive impact on adcomms decisions.

I could maybe fit in some more clinical stuff in these coming months...I've really exhausted a lot of it in this small town but I'll start making calls and see what I can set up. Yeah like I mentioned, the nonmedical is a mess right now. I have a folder full of all of that, and I just need to pull it all out and fix it.

I tutored for the college for a year at the community college, albiet through a paid position. I've done some tutoring at the university, not as much as I might like, but more volunteer work. Maybe like 3-5 hours a week for the last year? Mostly in science.

Hobbies! I have many. I'm a runner, though like I mentioned not at the collegiate level, though I run a lot of races, like the Race for the Cure. I'm a hiker and outdoorsman. I'm also a semi-accomplished musician...I can play like five instruments, none of them really well, but all of them decent.

Research forgot to mention I did two summers of, one at community, one at university. Both were pretty time intensive lasting a couple months and I put a lot of time into them.

Your added information gives me even more optimism that you'll do well in the application cycle, provided your LORs are strong, PS sets the right tone, and interview skills are decent.

Since time is short before the optimal application time, maybe check out some local nursing homes, as they have less red tape before you can start volunteering, often with no more than a recent TB skin test. A hospice program is another potential venue for clinical experience.

3.8+ gpa and 35 mcat is hardly typical WAMC lol. You will be fine! Just don't mess up your many interviews to come

It's been a while, but I'm a people person, and for jobs, I usually nailed interviews, so out of anything, that's probably what I'm least worried about. I'm not saying I'm perfect, but I'm good at answering questions about myself and my goals and essentially selling myself 😛 No dirty joke intended.

And working on contacting some hospice/nursing home stuff in the area, try to work with them and do some basic clinical stuff...we will see how it goes this coming week,
