Is anyone applying to U. of AZ? If so, what concentration? I am thinking about adding a school that I had on my original list (mainly U of AZ or SDSU) but am realizing that I still know very little about U-AZ's program in general beyond their website and don't hear about it much on here. Any thoughts?

I can't really offer much detail about MPH program specifics at UofA, but I can speak widely about how great the UofA is in general because I got my bachelors and masters there over the past six years. In fact, during the last semester of my MS degree, I took a global health class along with the MPH students and everyone seemed really nice and very hard working. Specifically, the class I took had some undergrads in it (cross listed as 400/500 level) but the class broke into two groups for the last hour or so and there were about 10 of us with the professor in a very small conference room...so, even as a non-MPH student, I had complete access to the professor and was very well received by the group. Also, the building where you would take all of your classes is brand new and state of the art in every way. The School of Public Health has its own building in a grouping of separate buildings comprised of Nursing, Medicine, Pharmacy, and Tucson's biggest hospital - The University Medical Center. Also, Tucson itself is great and revolves around UofA so it is very student friendly...plus, it is dirt cheap to live there. I never found myself without lots and lots of opportunities and the undergraduate campus is beautiful and has everything you could possibly want/need in a giant school.

Ultimately, I would have applied to UofA for MPH but I think I have exhausted my time in Tucson and really want to gain experience elsewhere. Sorry, I know that was a bit rambling...feel free to PM or reply if you want me to elaborate on anything in a more coherent way. 🙂

I just finished the graduate certificate in public health and was very happy with it. The professors are usually very helpful and open to questions.

With the horrific state of the Arizona economy, I would be concerned about rising tuition costs, classes and programs being cut, etc.

If you have any interest in community-based participatory research, the U of A is the place for you. Also, any interest in working with the Hispanic community or with rural health concerns, the U of A is very strong.

There is quite a bit to do in Tucson. Phoenix is 1.5 - 2 hours away.

Feel free to PM me with any more questions.

Do you guys know of any professional students (MD, PharmD specifically) that have completed their MPH while completing their doctorate? I am highly interested in getting an MPH, but I start pharmacy school in the Fall. I would like to do them together in the effort of time and money (they cap tuition for residents). I know that the MPH isn't a part of any dual program but I am wondering if I could work it out somehow. Anybody have any information on this or know anyone that could help me out?

Hi rxlea,

I'm starting as a DrPH student this fall, and while searching for a "PhD minor" (requirement in my program), I saw a lot of dual degree options with the MPH (various PhD programs and a joint JD/MPH). I just checked the website, and there is an MD/MPH option, but it didn't say anything about the PharmD; however, I don't think that means that it isn't possible. The public health faculty/admin are really receptive to emails - you might want to try contacting them.

Also check this out for more general dual degree info: http://www.publichealth.arizona.edu/AcademicPrograms/DualDegrees.aspx.

P.S. Did you decide where you're living yet? I'm moving out next week, and will be sticking to grad housing for year one - I'm not sure if that was a brilliant or stupid decision, but it at least spared me housing stress.

Thanks for the info! I will probably just have to contact them directly. I was hoping to find a student or grad of the program to tell me what it was like doing the dual :/

My girlfriend and I are going to be living about 10 minutes from campus in a house. I don't know anything about grad housing but at least you will be near everything. Do you have a roomate or are you by yourself?
