Hi everyone . . . i just found out i got off the waitlist at cornell . . . i'm now trying to decide between going there or sticking with my original plans to attend u of chicago . . . any comments would be appreciated! thanks 🙂

Both have great student bodies, and this would've been a tough decision for me, too. In the end, I would look back to my interview day at Chicago and remember that the students I interviewed with were some of the brightest and most engaging individuals I'd come across during the entire interview season. It was hard not to feel welcome talking with Sylvia and Dean Lombard, and in general, Pritzker impressed me on many levels.

Pritzker's basic science and clinical training are second-to-none, while I feel Cornell's curriculum raises more questions than it answers. Bottom line: Screw the rankings, go with Pritzker. You'll be the better for it.

Well, what city do you like better? New York or Chicago? Med school education is all the same anywhere you go, i.e. reading and memorizing out of textbooks.

I'd rather live in Chicago, just because it's cheaper, and more car friendly. What were your stats by the way, if you don't mind sharing?

i say cornell cornell cornell!
I have heard great things about the school and the students and not-so-great things about the students at UChicago.

care to share?

The students I've met (and I've met several, outside of my interview day) have been great. I typically don't bash students at other schools so I'm a bit taken back by this statement. If you've got something to say about UofC students come out and say it.

actually now that i think about it, it was the UNDERGRADS who i heard that about. Sorry for the confusion! I also dont want to bash anyone. 🙁

A lot of schools have that general flavor that they are known for - usually its only a handful of people though.

Forgiven 😉

Seriously though, there is a stark contrast b/w the undergrads there and the med students. Even one of my interviewers at UofC brought it up. She said that she can always tell the difference b/w an undergrad and a med student at UofC. An undergrad appears more stressed out, quiet, and gloomy whereas the med students tend to be the exact opposite. It's a really interesting phenomenon.

thanks explosivo! You are, after all, my favorite Count. 😉

That's perfect for you! You wont have to be with the gloomy kids. 🙂

hey -

as a recent grad from the u of c, i gotta defend myself and my alma mater. if you don't talk smack about other med school student bodies, don't talk about the undergrads either... 😉

yes, we may be known to the outsider as some ugly nerds (present company excluded, of course) but i'll vouch for the u of c's increasingly social and well-adjusted normal student.

that said, i'm a huge fan of pritzker and its students, and if you go there as you'd planned, you'll have a fantastic time.

good luck, and say whattup to hyde park and the bslc for me!

hmm, made a decision yet jabooty? trying to get some more people for Club Olin this fall 😉

hehe, in all seriousness, this thread is terribly subjective but i'll give it stab. Well, one obvious thing to consider is NYC versus Chi-town, which isnt a no brainer decision....I actually consider Chicago my favorite US city above all others, but new york is a blast too 😉. Concerns about cost of living difference really arent an issue i believe. Remember, Cornell housing is dirt cheap for nyc (<500 $ a month), and a car is completely unnecessary in the big apple. The curriculum is a personal preference thing, I cant tell you if you would like a progressive or more traditional curriculum. Both schools have very strong clinical/basic science research and excellent residency placements.

How is the financial aid at both schools? If you talk to our fin aid lady Gladys she can give you a pretty good idea of what you can expect. I think i remember Pritzker's yearly budget being 55K a year, versus 50K currently for cornell...not a monumental difference, but a difference nonetheless.

well, in this situation i would say cornell, but i'm obviously horrendously biased 😛 both are great schools and you cant really go wrong here. Price nonwithstanding, if you have a preference for either location or curriculum, just go with it 🙂

jabooty,

what did you do to get off the Cornell waitlist? I'm not sure if anyone knows the answer to this, but are they sending out their final acceptance letters?

Thanks for all the help everyone . . . I've decided to go to Cornell .. it was a tough decision esp. since I'm from the Midwest, but I think this will be a "growing experience" for me. How did I get off the waitlist? I have no idea . . . I did write several letters expressing my interest in Cornell - maybe that did it. Anyhow, best of luck to all those still waiting - don't lose hope just yet!

i spoke to the cornell admissions ppl a few days ago and was told that the class is full and that they're not expecting much more movement. i really had my hopes up for this place, but things aren't looking too good for me... in any case, congrats jabooty and good luck adoctortobe!

sweet!!
now post up on the cornell roll call thread
