Most of the schools I have been to have been really helpful about providing a list of hotels in the surrounding area that have shuttles, etc. to the school, but I haven't gotten anything like that from Iowa. I'm going to call them on Monday, but has anyone here gone to Iowa and might want to help me out here with some advice? 👍 😀

don't waste your time. she's going to tell you to go to their
website. ill post as soon as i find it.

hold on.

from the interview link...

Where can I stay while in Iowa City?
A complete listing of local accommodations may be found on the Iowa City/Coralville Convention and Visitors Bureau website at http://www.icccvb.org. Go to individual lodging sites to find rates, amenities, location, availability, and to make reservations.

Thanks for the advice...I was hoping for discounts, shuttles, the whole bit! Anyone ever stayed around U of Iowa and know what's close by?

I don't know personally, but I have a cousin who went to dental school there and they were really helpful... perhaps contact the dental school and you'll find a "more helpful" group there to point you in the right direction.

Use the link in the previous post. I would stay at the Heartland inn as it is close, let them know you are interviewing for a medical position (sometimes hotels give discounts to residents interviewing and not medical students but you can swing it both ways by being ambiguous). The Heartland is your run of the mill 1-2 star hotel with decent amenities (highspeed internet connections) and it has shuttles to the hospital/university. Also, it is very close to Bars and good restaurants. If you are coming from the eastern Iowa Airport (Cedar rapids) it is about 12 miles and they have a shuttle from the airport which was about $20 or $35 roundtrip. Sometimes you can convince the taxis to take you at the same rate. Be careful this time of year- it is BUTT COLD! Before you leave make sure you take a taxi just East of campus around the "old capitol" and check out the student life. It is an awesome array of trendy bars, restaurants, shops, and generally people just hanging out and having a good time. I dont know how the winter will affect the hanging out.

i stayed at the iowa house, which is right across the river. was a 5min walk to the med school campus.

I would definitely recommend staying at the Iowa House Hotel. It is actually the back portion of the IMU (student union), which is in the center of campus. You won't need a shuttle to go to the med school or to the downtown area, because as mentioned before, both are in easy walking distance. Rather than being on the other side of town, staying at the IMU will let you get more of the actual environment of campus. Also, when you need to go eat or anything like that, there are several food places and coffee carts as well. The breakfast at the River Room is especially good and cheap. I am not sure of the costs compared to other hotels, but here is a link:
