so wait, are you restricted to being a commuter? and where do you live now?

(though between the two schools, I'd choose wayne).

Currently i live in a small city called Hamtramck (which is near Detroit)

i can't live on campus, and am restricted to commuting as you said 🙁

ah yes, I have many a polish grandparent who come from there.

yeah, honestly it's a tough call. Wayne has a few more options as far as research goes, but Dearborn has a slightly stronger student body. Who knows what you'll get in terms of teaching quality.

...sadly I'm not totally from the detroit area, so few of my HS classmates chose either place.

thanks for your input 🙂

anyone else?

Depends if you want a larger or smaller class. Did you not give Oakland University a try?

Wayne is good, but your classes are huge. OU has much smaller class sizes and you are less than 30 minutes away.

I don't know much about U of M Dearborn, so I can't say whether it's good or bad. What I do know is that there are a huge amount of research opportunities and a lot of funding available at Oakland.

(Yes, I go to OU)

Honestly,

If you want to be a physician why not go to a school with a medical school if you have the oppourtunity. Not only this but Wayne is affiliated with the DMC, and they are literally accross the street from each other. This will open up opportunitites for volunteer, research, and work opportunities. It also opens up the door for some networking opportunities. I attended CMU for undergrad, and I am finishing up a masters in molecular bio at wayne. I appreciate the opportunities that I got at CMU, but attending wayne has strengthened my app. a lot more than central, or any other school in the state would have. I guess each school has its pluses and minuses, but as Wayne's slogan says, it is a "Education that prepares you for the real world." You see a lot of things at wayne, you see that there is a lot more going on in this world than what is going on in your world. People are real. They are what they are at wayne. I don't know much about UM dearborn, but I know that they don't have the research going on that wayne does, they don't have the programs, or the hospital affiliation. I don't mean to be biased, but I would choose wayne.

I hope this helps

ah, the HAM !!! it is actually INSIDE detroit, not near it 😀

I'd pick Wayne St., since Wayne loves picking people out of their own undergrad for their med school... and it's about 10-15 minutes from hamtramck...

UofM Dearborn carries no weight unless you want to transfer in to the AA campus later 👍

polish heritage ? I hate you a little less now 😉

i was just going to say if you see yourself maybe going to ann arbor in a year or two if your situation changes then definately UM-D because the actual grades transfer not just the credit. but if you are staying UM-D has a very poor pre-med body, everyone goes in but few come out the highest mcat score was a 29 for the past administration thats coming from the pre-med advisor. i dont have the numbers for wayne but he dmc is an awsome place to research like people said. also if your from hamtramak you wont mind being in detroit like some kids from the burbs would. but in the end its where you can imagine yourself going for 4 years.

Thanks for you replies everybody! 👍

your advice has helped greatly 😀

thanks again

I'm not sure about that... At the Flint campus, transfering credits to ann arbor is a major pain in the ass. Basically they do that to prevent the school from being a "transitional college". no idea if that's an issue in Dearborn though...

It's worth rethinking the drive to Ann Arbor. You don't even have to go to class that much if you work it out well, particularly if you are a science major. Also, I'm pretty sure they are getting rid of Friday classes.

If you have a chance to go to UMICH-Ann Arbor over these schools, I would seriously consider it. I stress this because you are posting on a premed med forum.

i am sure about that. Plenty of people do a year or two at Dearborn then come up to Ann Arbor or take summer classes there. No one i know has had any trouble at all, and they have the actual grades. i.e. an 'A' at UM-D orgo shows up as A on their Ann arbor GPA. of course on amcas they see the school, so thats not a big deal.

this is also true, its been done. also, i don't know where you got the thing about fridays, i've heard the administration bitch about not having enough friday classes saying it's a waste of classroom space.

I go to UM-D

My sister goes to WSU.

I am jealous of her. I hate UM-D. Pick WSU.

Heh no chance on the no Friday classes. The Monday, Wednesday, Friday schedule of Chemistry courses is almost dogmatic. To the OP, seriously think about commuting to UM-AA. It's the strongest school you've gotten into (congratulations, by the way), and there's a lot of opportunity for research. I know of a few students, and even professors who commute from Detroit, East Lansing, and Jackson. Of UM-D v. Wayne though, I'd go with Wayne for getting into Wayne's Med School (although I haven't seen any admits at U of M's medschool this year from Wayne, or UM-D).

If I were you, I would not pick a school solely based on them accepting you to their medical school. Wayne State accepts students from virtually any school in Michigan, such as UM Ann Arbor, UM Flint, UM Dearborn, WSU, OU, and so forth. Instead, I'd broaden my horizons. But if you can, go to Ann Arbor, only if you can.

A superstar is a superstar no matter what undergraduate institution they go to.

That's the point, that with a U of M undrgrad, out of any of those places listed, you could go to almost any med school across the country, whereas you're starting to limit yourself at Wayne or UM-D. UM-AA is hard, big, etc., but you're surrounded by a lot of really smart and talented people, and are therefore encouraged (and sometimes forced) to rise to a new level.
