Alright so I definitely put this up before in a U Miami post and got all of zero responses. Hopefully the second time is a charm. I just wanted to see who else is going to be in Miami for their first year of med school this summer.

SN/Undergrad/Home-Current local/First Name (if willing)

Crazyterp/ U of MD/ North Potomac, MD/ Amit

BTW I am gonna head down to Miami at the end of May (28-31st) to look for apartments/houses with another future first year. If anyone else is gonna be down there and wants to meet up pm me.

This is a great idea, CRAZYTERP! I can't wait to see you guys in August. I want to see who will be our next victims. *smiles evilly* 😉 Seriously, we just like to give each other a hard time here in Miami.😀 Enjoy your summer and good luck apartment shopping.😎

I am pretty sure I will be there. This was a really nice school...it was my #2 from interviews.

Here is my info:

Davischick/UC Davis/ Davis, Ca/Sarah

Hey, I am accepted at Miami so far, and it brings me great joy! However, I am still waiting on the 3 waitlists at other schools and my final decision might change, (which I doubt) . In any case, I live in Fort Lauderdale, and would love to meet up with you at the end of May looking for apartments in Miami area. You can pm or e-mail me. Let's start building the future MS-1 connections NOW!!! Valeriya

I am not going to Miami but I wish I was.

CRAZYTERP is my idol, !!

Good luck everyone and enjoy the sun, it looks like I will be spending my medical education battling the blistering cold of the midwest.

will be miami bound. lookin' for roomie!!...anyone??? isn't may too early to be looking for a place?? I was thinking mid july for an august lease...someone help me out here...

Hey Aussie,
I think school starts like the first week of August so my plan is to hopefully get a July lease and move in like second week of July. I have never really made a move like this and since Miami is like a foreign country to me I figure it will give me a week or two to get my feet on the ground before school starts.

The first year I stayed with when I interviewed said he came down in June but I cannot get off work then bc it's my last month and I don't want to sell out the people I work with. Plus going to look for an apartment/house in May is just really an excuse to go to the beach for a few days😉

Cya all in a few months!

Yogi Bear's post about financial aid got me thinking. Has anyone heard anything from Miami regarding financial aid other than the out of state scholarship? Or do you know when they usually send them out? Just wondering... Thanks.

-Amit

we don't have to pay our deposit until May, right? no word from the financial department...

Talked with them 2 weeks ago and they mentioned that they should be sending stuff out by the end of March... so, we should be expecting things very soon.

What's up Crazyterp and Future Classmates!

I'm am sooo U. of Miami bound, I can't wait to get out of this cold Maryland weather.

About housing, guys - if you want to live in one of the two apartments right on campus (walking distance to class) you guys should register **NOW**.

I just checked today and they already have a waitlist!!!

Anyways, the two places are: Jackson something (305.585.5720), and Dominion Towers (305.324.0900), from what I understand Dominion towers is a bit nicer and it also has a parking garage.

Call them up and have them fax you the floor plans and waitlist application, etc.

If you guys find any other nice apartments please do post! Or if you already have a place in one of those two, i'm looking to live in a 2 bedroom\2 bath in either of those locations, please PM 🙂

- Verite

Hey Verite,
When I was down in Miami the people I stayed with kinda shyed away from Dominion and Jackson towers. They said the area wasn't too safe and that there isn't much nearby in terms of grocery store, restaurants etc. If I were you I would check out the website they have for incoming first years. Someone posted it on a previous thread but I will put it back up again. It's for last years class still but it has lots of info on specific neighborhoods and gives you the pluses and minuses from a students perspective. the web address is:

http://www.mededu.miami.edu/Admissions

Also check out the commuter affairs page on the undergrad website, but remember the mileage is to the coral gables campus, not Jackson.

Talk to u all later,

-Amit

Ugh, those two places are bad locations eh? Kind of think of it, I don't remember ANY shops near it, so going out for food etc will be very very difficult without a car.

Ugh!! I'm thinking about finding a place in South Beach or Miami Beach now..since they will be close to places to eat\groceries, etc...

Where is everyone else looking to live?

hey guys,

i'll be most prolly going to UM this August -- depending on a couple WLs. i'd really appreciate any housing info you all are able to find (i'm new to miami and dont know a thing about good locations, etc.) i'm looking share an 2/3 br apt, please let me know if anyone is interested. thanks. btw, anybody know how we can get football tix (i wanna make sure i get to see my gators win home opener at UM!!).

i'm so confused about what i should do about housing. some people tell me to live away from campus, but not too far...others tell me live in dominion and jackson towers. i really don't know what to do. can any miami folks give me some advice? i'm too looking for roommate(s) so please pm me. shadowboxer, i pmed you.

Hey What's up Aussie,

I'm staying with a friend about 5 minutes from the school. I talked to him yesterday and he told me that around 90% of the students at the med school commute.

Apparently, it's very, very difficult to get a place at the Jackson and Dominion towers, since they have an extensive waitlist.

Shadowboxer, Aussie, Crazyterp, etc. The place I'm staying at is "Park Place at the Bay." Here's the

LINK

It's about 5 minutes from the school by car, and if you don't have a car, there's suppose to be a metro stop across the street that takes you to the school. I'll be paying about 500 a month for a 2 bedroom\2 bath there. Fully gated community.

Good luck finding a place and see you in the Fall.

- Verite

Hey Verite,

Congrats on finding a place!!! I checked it out on the web and it looks pretty sweet. My other friend from UMD is also down there right now looking at places too. She found a two bedroom like 15 mins from the school for like $1200 but your deal sounds way cheaper. I will have to let her know. Who knows, maybe all the UMD peeps will be living in the same building? You know we gotta keep it real up in that peice. jk

See ya all in August!

-Amit

Hey Crazyterp,

That would be great if you guys lived at Park Place by the Bay. And get this, my roomate is ALSO a UMD graduate. They should rename the complex to Terp Towers or something 😀

Anyways, anyone else looking for a place to stay, definately check out Park Place by the Bay, it would be nice to get a good # of first years in one location.

I just bought my ticket since it's nice and cheap right now...gonna head down July 29. See you guys this fall!

- Verite

EDIT: Also, try to find places that doesn't use US 1 to get to school or to places, I was told that US 1 in Miami makes D.C. traffic look good.

Hey. Congrats to everyone going to Miami. Im a second year student there getting ready for the boards, but if anyone has any questions they would like to ask me about living, ive lived in a couple of places in miami and might be able to offer some help. I lived in the south beach area my first year, and now i live in the brickell area and love it. Ill keep this short, but if anyone has any specific questions, just PM me if you want.

See ya.

Doh, so my roomate's roomate decided to stay now I don't have a place to stay anymore. So if anyone's looking for a place, please PM me!

Thanks!

Hey guys, I'm not going to UM, but I grew up in Miami. Word of advice: DO NOT live on campus unless you want to be mugged or shot.

Miami Beach is really nice, but tends to be a little expensive.

If I were you, I'd try to find a place in South Miami. It's about a 25-30 minute commute, which isn't that bad in my opinion. You can take the Metrorail to save some time; you have to make one train transfer on the way, but then you get dropped off right in front of Jackson.

Has anyone received their financial aid packages yet? Just wondering. I was told early May when I called the office a few weeks ago but i haven't gotten anything yet. It's just strange bc everyone else I know at other schools has already heard and I wondered if Miami sends them out in rounds.

-Amit

Hey CT,

I was just about to ask that same question. When I called awhile back, they told me that they were finishing up the financials for the graduating seniors then they'd work on the incoming freshmen.

I called too. They said they will have the financial aid packages done, within a couple of weeks. They like making us sweat, huh?

I just think its ridiculous that they make you wait so long. I mean I withrdrew from my other schools weeks ago but what if someone is trying to make a decision between two or more schools for the May 15th deadline and they can't because they have no idea what type of aid they are going to recieve. I feel like it just makes things so much harder especially when at this stage it should be smooth sailing...

Sorry, just bored at work (only been here 15 mins) and feel like venting bc I finally have nothing else to worry about and am so used to it I can't stop! 😀

Live in the Brickell area near the Metrorail. Very nice and a closer commute than South Miami, but a little more expensive. Be careful with the Metrorail though. Its horrible during the rainy season because the damn thing floods. Large puddles of water gather up and moves back and forth with the train. The Metrorail is the biggest Miami government failure in history, among many. You guys will soon learn that many of the politicians in Miami are hispanic, they win elections so easily because half the people here are hispanic and nobody else votes. Many of them are unqualified and thus crooked politicians. Alex Pinellas, the mayor of Miami has not done a damn thing during his term except get on TV and panic once a hurricane threatens the area.

Is there anyone on this message board that is going to Miami and has not found a roommate yet? I know there is the other housing message board, but the people on there have already found roommates (within a week). I talked to some, but I did not know I needed to decide within a couple of emails of talking to a person! Anyways, if any of you still need a roomate or have advice- let me know.

Thanks

Hello, I am still looking for a roommate to move closer to go to the University of Miamithis August. Right now I live in Fort Lauderdale, and the thought of everyday commute gives me chills. If you are interested, let's pm each other, get together and look for some apartments! Let me know, Valeriya

Hey everyone,
I am going down to Miami Wed to start looking for apartments and will prob be there until Friday. If anyone is down there and wants to grab a drink or some eats pm me and I will send you my cell number to coordinate.

What the hell is your problem with hispanics? I know of many white and black politicians who are extremely crooked. You're comments were extremely biased and a bit offensive to hispanic SDNers (like myself). I used to think you were an ok guy, but after reading this post I now think otherwise.

Sorry if this offended you or anyone who read this. I did not mean this in general for all hispanics, more toward the politicians in Miami. My closest friends are all hispanic so I am in no way racist. My opinion of Miami politicians are biased, I admit, because my father was fired by Mr. Joe Carrollo (ex-major of of the city of Miami). I'm sure you are familiar with him, especially after he threw that cup at his wife. My father was fired by the guy for no reason at all. Apparently a friend (unqualified for the job in every way) of Carrollo needed a job, and made room for him at the expense of my father's position. The Miami Herald and the Sun Sentinel has reported similar situations that occured with other policitians in Miami. I challenge anyone to find evidence to the contrary that many Miami politicians (many who just happen to be hispanic) have a record of corruption. Again, I am not attacking hispanics, only Miami politicians.

This is not even the place for crap like this anyways, but I want to make everything clear as day.

Alright, Solid. I accept your apology.😎 It's just that your original post came off as sounding a little racist. I see now that you did not intend for this to happen. I'm just tired of people in Miami knocking hispanics in general just because of a few bad apples. We are decent people, but there are some hispanics who have given the rest of us a bad reputation. I'm sorry to hear about your dad's situation. That was completely wrong of Carrollo to do, and you are right in holding onto your anger for the man. Just remember that we are not all like him. 🙂

Hey Guys,
I just got back from Miami yesterday. My roommate and I found a two bedroom townhouse in Coconunt Grove for 1450/month. The location is great and we are a 15 min car ride to Jackson (timed it both ways). We weren't familiar with Miami at all and we went through a real estate co. named EWM. Our Relator was Max Alavarez. He was awesome and drove us the entire city and gave us a lot of info regarding which spots were good and which weren't. The number I have for the office is 1800-233-0079. OR go to their website, www.ewm.com. Hope everyone has luck finding a place. seeya in 2 months. PM me if you have any questions.
-Amit

Hey CrazyTerp,

That's great, I'm going to be living like 5 mins from you.

On another note, has anyone received their financial aid package from Miami yet....?

Hey Verite,
When I was down in Jackson I went by the Fin aid office. They told me they were sending out packets this week. She gave me the paper work and said to mail it in asap. I don't really know what the deal is but she looked like she didnt want to talk to me.

On another note, anyone sign up for health insurance through UofM. I think its through MegaLife. I have been trying to do it online but its crashing on me. Anyone else have similar problems or other suggestions?

Thanks,
Amit

Hey everyone,

I'm actually applying this summer and am seriously interested in U Miami. This question is esp. for the out-of-staters: What did y'all find most appealing about the school? What did the school seem to be looking for in out-of-state applicants (I'm a Maryland resident)? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Speaking from experience I think what they look for, especially in out of staters, is a desire to do some type of research. They seem like they are trying to compose a student body highly interested in pursuing research experience while at UM. Also it helps to try and talk with Dr. Hinkley personally if you are really interested in attending. While at my interview I met someone from Maryland as well, who had met with Dr. Hinkley personally. He ended up being the first person accepted to the 06' entering class. Who you talk to can play a big impact on getting accepted. Other than that you just need solid grades and MCAT scores. Anyways......GOOD LUCK🙂

Zeusers is right ... having Dr. Hinkley as your interviewer helps a ton (speaking from experience and also from talking to MS1 there who had him as an interviewer). Also true about wanting to do research (which I do). Miami wants to move up in the rankings and having people do research will help them do that.

They were also very interested in well-rounded applicants who have interests outside of medicine. And any ties you have to Florida are helpful - like why you would go there instead of your state school. This is esp. pertinent for CA residents who have good state schools to choose from at cheaper prices. Good luck!
