For those of you that know anything about the University of Michigan I would really appreciate a reply.

I was talking to a student at the school who is a 3rd year currently. He stated to me that "if you want to specialize come to Michigan". "If you end up in the top 35 of the class you will get into the speciality of your choice somwhere that you apply". Do you guys agree with this statement? It seems to me that every school that I hear about you have to be in the top 5 to specialize in a field such as ortho or endo or oral surgery. I am sure that he did not include GPRs in this category either.

I guess from what he said that the school you attend does make a huge differnce. He told me that it just takes one letter or phone call from a world known professor to get you into that program you want. I know that the University of Michigan does have some very famous Faculty. I just would like some imput on this from you guys and gals! Thanks!!!!

That can very well be true!! You know what they say....."It's who you know that counts and not what you know!" 😎

i've heard quite a bit that you DO NOT have to finish in the top 5% to get into a specialty. schools like uconn, columbia, and penn have specialty placement rates near 100%. Now, that doesnt mean you go where you want. But generally, if you want perio, you get perio somewhere. unc said that graduates that wish to specialize have something like an 80% first or second choice acceptance. that does not mean, however, that where you rank doesnt matter. but when preparing to specialize, acceptance is based on much more than rank, such as board scores. matter of fact, i heard just the other day (on this forum) that someone with a 4.0 gpa didnt get OMS, but classmates with a 3.5 did.
