Hello everyone!
I have recently joined this website and have found tons of helpful information about pharmacy schools and the whole pharmacy application process. I hope to enter pharmacy school in the Fall 2010. U of Pitt is one of my top 3 choices but there doesn't seem to be a lot of information on here about it. I was wondering if those who got accepted there this year could share their stats and any information that may be helpful to me as well as others who are applying to Pitt! Thank you 🙂

Welcome fellow SDNer 🙂

I just got into this whole SDN thing myself, but I agree it has helped me tremendously throughout the application process. I start P1 year this August at Pitt and I'm really excited.

I graduated in 2002 from Pitt Bradford with a BS in Biology (I guess I'm considered non-tradional). I have decent grades (3.45 overall GPA -- a little higher in the math and sciences) and got a 76 on my PCAT. I have worked in a pharmacy for about a year and half now - which ultimately was the deciding factor in me going back to school and pursuing my PharmD.

If I can help in any way let me know.

I plan on applying to Pitt also for Fall 2010 admission. A post I started several weeks ago was discussing the best pharmacy school in PA. Pitt was the one that was most agreed upon as being the best one. In KAPLAN's Get Into Pharmacy School book the stats were 11.6% acceptance rate, average GPA 3.65, minimum GPA considered 3.00 and minimum PCAT considered 50%. These stats were from the 2006-2007 class, so PharmCAS might have more up to date ones.

I will be a P1 student at Pitt next year. My stats were not outstanding, but here they are.

Overall GPA: 3.6
Math & Science: 3.7
*I got a C in O-Chem II, and although it did not replace my grade, I retook it and got an A.
PCAT: Overall 83%
I also have a B.S in Finance from ASU.

Pitt takes 108 people every year, but those numbers are rather inaccurate. They have a pre-pharmacy 0-6 program that allows incoming hs graduates to be admitted to their program without taking the PCAT and going through the application process through PharmCAS. As a result, only about 50% are accepted as transfer students to the pharmacy program. So, 50% of the 108 are pretty much reserved before the interviews roll around.
Also another thing you should keep in mind is that Pitt pharmacy doesn't consider you as a graduate student until your 3rd year of the program. As a result, you are not able to get the GradPlus loans until your 3rd year. It's something to keep in mind before you apply because Pharm.D won't come cheap. So expect for you to take out private loans or ParentPlus loans to cover your cost for the first two years.
Hope this helps and if you have any more information, msg me.

I was accepted at Pittsburgh for 2009, but will not be attending.

My stats:
undergrad science GPA - 3.0
grad science GPA - 3.3
PCAT - 86

I'm out-of-state, and they only accept a few students out of state every year, so it's not impossible to get it..even if your stats are a bit on the lower side.

Pitt is a wonderful school..if my situation was a little different, I would love love to attend 🙂

have you declined your seat at UB yet?

Hey aplif3. We'll probably be seeing a lot more of each other throughout the next 4 years 🙂

I'm currently an undergraduate at Pitt and just finished my sophomore year. I plan on attending Pitt pharm (hopefully I can get in). I am beginning to study for the PCAT's now and I will take them next June. Also, I'm majoring in Neuroscience and will get a B.S. in that before pharm school. My current gpa is a 3.6. I volunteer at UPMC and I also work. Next year I'm doing research in a lab that handles cocaine and monkeys!! 😀Pitt is great and has wonderful opportunities!!

I got the "conditional acceptance" and will be starting my pre-pharm at Pitt this fall. We still have to apply thorugh PharmCas, take the PCATs and interview but as long as everything goes decent then they will accept you automatically into the Pharmacy school.

So how is the Pittsburgh city/area? I have family in Pennsylvania but they live on the other side of the state in Wilkes-Barre. I have been to Philly and love that city but have never been to Pittsburgh. Is the area where the school is located moderately safe?

Thanks!

I'm also from Eastern PA. I go to school about 45 minutes west of Wilkes-Barre. I've only been to the University of Pittsburgh one time, but I thought it was very nice. It is in a city, so there are always going to be risks, but I feel as it is in a nice part of the city. I have several friends that go there for undergraduate study and none of them have had any problem.

I've lived in Pittsburgh my whole life and I have to say that I really like the city and especially Oakland. Oakland has a secure feel to it-there are people everywhere! and I've never felt too vulnerable there. Pitt is a great school for the health sciences, with UPMC there are so many research and intern opportunities 🙂

I think that Pittsburgh is a great area to live while in school. I live in Oakland (where the pharmacy school is) and I feel very safe when I'm by myself. There are a lot of inexpensive/free things to do around the city. Also, there are many places to eat, shop, etc.

Have you guys heard anything about orientation information yet?

Negative. I'm hoping it comes soon though. I would also like a list of books we need so I can go down there and get them before the rush begins.

I was told that since the books we'll need are only for pharmacy students, we won't have to worry about the books as much. We'll just have to pick a time when the store isn't so busy to pick them up. Hopefully, the books won't be terribly expensive. But I would really like to see some more info about orientation soon.
