Ok, so is it a good idea to respond to both of the optional essays???

AND, what's up with the population of the cities where you've lived question??? I have NO CLUE how to answer that...do I get an almanac or something?

Yeah, I think it helps them get to know you better to respond to both essays. For Question 3, you might just mention some academic discrepancies if you have any. Or even expand on some aspects of your AMCAS personal statement. In terms of the second question, I thought they were looking for past experiences in small towns since Burlington is pretty small itself. Look up your city and state with a google search. Do something like "Burlington, VT census." That should get you the information you need.

one of the questions ask what your activities were after submission of your amcas. actually, i just studied for the August mcat and now I'm doing secndaries. I went to hawaii for a week, and THAT'S IT! this is negative to them, huh?

UVM is really interested in promoting small-town docs - since part of the school's mission is to promote the presence of docs in rural areas in VT/ME.

And it's true that VT only has about 40,000 people in it.

I interview there Oct. 7th. I'm psyched, b/c it's my first choice (I'm in-state).

go to the census web page. you can look up populations of towns in there. they just want to see i think how happy you could be in a small area. Burlington only has about 38,000 people and if you are from a big city, you might be pretty miserable there.

Gosh, now I'm worried. If I would have known that they want to know that you'll be comfortable in a small town, I would have said that. I listed the roughly 30 different places I've lived in... when I was a kid, that was Chicago, Guadalajara, and Los Angeles... populations in the several millions... then in my adult years I've lived in Seattle and smaller towns... because I HATE city living! My current town has a population of 33,000. I hope they notice I've been living in smaller towns for over 10 years...

Correction: Burlington only has 38,000 people in it, which means the rest of the state brings the state pop. to more than 40,000.

Anyone else heard from Vermont? It's my 1st choice, but I'm an out of stater and I hear that UVM has practically no room for us. I'd love to practice small town medicine (I live in a Colorado mountain town now of about 1500 people, but only half and hour from Boulder.)

My LOR writers have finally got their job done, so my file should be opening soon. Here's hoping... :scared:

Vermont's population is 610,000+; I'm sure Bob was being humorous

Not True. Vermont has about 600,000 people.

I have got an interview at UVM coming up! Im an out-of-stater, and although I don't think I would mind practicing small town medicine, I have never lived in a small town! In fact, I have lived in the same house in southern california (LA suburb) my entire life. So don't worry about not including your burning desire to be a rural, small town physician: I don't think it helps that much.

PS. my numbers are horrible and I have merely decent EC's, so your experience with small towns doesn't make too much of a difference.

What island?

If I remember correctly, someone on here said that Vermont doesn't start interviewing until December. That would be a bummer.

This is not true at all. I would say that about 2/3 of my class is out of state. They sometimes will waitlist out of staters until they find out for sure how many Vermonters are coming, and then they will let in a slew of out of staters off the waitlist right after May 15th.

Also not true. The first interviews of the year are this Thurs.

Wow! Two thirds? Awesome! Does anyone offhand know the projected size of the 2005 class?

Then this guy doesn't know what he's talking about.

I see...Actually what he meant was that they only make admissions decisions 3 times/year. So everyone who interviews in Sept-early Dec. is reviewed and finds out their status in Dec. So in theory, it doesn't really matter if you get an early interview, you'll still be waiting awhile to find out.

UVM's class is typically around 100 - we have 101 in my class...I don't anticipate it changing much next year.

UVM is happy to take people from Colorado, like a couple of friends of mine who are paying $$$ in out of state tuition for the next 4 years.

You may not hear from UVM for a while. Two of us who took the Aug MCAT last year got our interview invitations in February for March interviews (my AMCAS went in at the end of June, secondary in August). I think they get so many out of state apps that they wait until you are likely to have had a few other interviews, and possibly have already been accepted elsewhere and plan to withdraw. Because of the price, UVM seems to be a place that out of staters go to as a last resort if they don't get in elsewhere.

Does UVM notify us when our app is complete or should I give them a call. I know some schools are a little perturbed when you call bugging them.

Thanks!
Diana

Diana,

I don't think they usually send out any kind of notification and their phone lines are usually really hard to get through during their "office hours" that they have set up for calls about apps. I emailed the admissions office to find out if I was complete (gave my name and AMCAS ID) and got an answer within 24 hours. 👍

Hope this helps!
