Is anybody bringing any pets to live with them next year? I've got a cat... although she acts more like a dog most of them time. I'm bringing her with me.

Nope... I'm not really a pet person. I grew up on a small farm and thought I wanted to be a vet until I realized that I wasn't a huge fan of animals. I like them, but I don't love them enough to own one.

Anyway, what's your cats name and how does it act like a dog? That seems pretty cute 🙂

Any word about student hosting yet for Preview Weekend? They said they'd contact us by tomorrow, but I haven't heard anything yet...

Me neither. I can't wait.

Just got an e-mail...

140 - People coming to preview
31 - Penn Med students who have signed up to host

Do the math...We need you.

This happens every year. Increasing pleas of increasing urgency will bring out enough hosts, even if they have to squeeze 7 people into Nu Sigma Nu (again). Don't worry... You will get a host! The deadline might just get set back a bit.

hey guys,
anyone know what the academic calendar for penn looks like. i'm a little concerned because i heard someone mentioned that the break between 1st and 2nd year is very minimal as is the time between quarters. any ideas?

Her name's Gwen. She's the only cat I know that needs attention all of the time. She's extremely friendly to ALL people. She loves to be petted by anyone. Most people who HATE cats will usually admit that she is the only cat that they like. Although, I did try walking her on a leash a few times, and she hated that. She kind of just squatted down and refused to walk.

Go there and look under Module 3. There are the academic calendars for 1st and 2nd year.

My understanding was that we had the second longest first year behind Duke. The break between first and second year is almost exactly two months. This is thanks to getting in the clinics six months early. Therefore, it's a tradeoff. If you have any programs you really want to do between first and second year you should make sure they will accomodate you for only 2 months, as this is an issue for some people every year. That being said, you can always find short-term opportunities. For example, Guatemala is an increasingly popular place to do summertime global health at our med school, and I went there for six weeks if you wanted to talk about that sort of thing.

Christmas break usually runs from 12-20/21 to 1/2-1/3. Seems pretty standard. First year you get a spring break for a week, second year you don't. Once you're in clinics--don't schedule anything 😉

Less than a week till second look weekend!!!

I'm thinking of skipping the daytime Thursday activities because otherwise it means using an extra vacation day, but will be there for the dinner at night. I think the community service part was well intended, but I'm really going to learn about the curriculum and meet students. I kind of thought I'd figure out the community service stuff later (I do plan on doing some when I start school). Am I making a mistake not going? Anyone want to tell me I'm acting like a selfish, over-privileged, vermouth-drinking, collar-popping ass? I won't be offended I promise. At the least it'll get this thread going.

Allright for now...

Yeah! You are definitely a selfish over privileged, non derserving blah blah.......Jk.

Seriously, I think you should do whatever is convenient for you. It would be cool if we could all hang out a little though. I would really like to learn more about my future (or possible future) classmates.

If you're selfish, I am too. I'm not showing up until 4Pm for the Activities Fair.

Anyone else getting excited? I just heard from my Preview host today! I can't wait to meet everyone.

I'm excited! And I am thrilled that the dress is casual... yay for jeans! 🙂

Do we have any idea what these Destination Gatherings are? Do we need club/bar-type tops for them or can we just wear our casual outfit from the Preview day? Can anyone who attended Preview in the past or knows what these gatherings are help out?

I can't wait to meet everyone and learn more about the city of brotherly love. That being said, has anyone signed up for Penn relay?

Preview:

Destination gatherings: Casual think jeans rather than club attire
the dinners out should largely be casual and they are pay your own way unlike the rest of the meals i think.
Housing tour! Yes there is a housing tour of many places! And a panel of students to pester with housing questions. It ought to all be answered.. really! (for the tour please please bring good walking shoes)
Everyone should have heard from their host by the end of the day, today.

see you all there!

Hey guys,
Check your financial aid page. I believe they just posted our financial aid awards

I just got the housing tour report from the student I'm hosting and I can't believe they didn't tell you guys about this. Spread the word:

South St. bridge to be demolished, rebuilt
http://www.dailypennsylvanian.com/vnews/display.v/ART/43fc137b94ff1?in_archive=1

If you move into that area where lots of med students live now, you will end up walking at least 10 minutes out of your way each way or you will have to use the route 40 bus (which is pretty unreliable). They're projecting that the South St Bridge will be closed for 18 months, beginning in 2007.

I just want to say that everyone I met at Preview was amazing. I am pretty sure I will be at Penn in August- so sure that I'm dropping my other acceptances this week.

Random question I forgot to ask at Preview: where is the closest grocery store (not a specialty place like Whole Foods/Trader Joes), somewhere like Albertsons or Safeway?

I noticed your original question included bulk food purchases. The closest thing is BJ's which is in South Philly. I'd guesstamate that's about 3 miles from campus or center city, so you'd need a car for that one.

As for grocery stores, there's a Thriftway (South Sq. Market) at 23rd and South that's popular with the Penn crowd. Other choices include Fresh Grocer, which isn't particularly a specialty place, at 40th and Walnut. There's also Superfresh at 10th and South, 5th and Spruce, and Pathmark at Washington and Gray's Ferry (all of these pretty much car distance from campus).

I always hit up the Reading Terminal Market for groceries, 12th and Filbert. It's great for meats, fish, and produce. Always cheap, fresh, and very tasty. It's a real American landmark, and is worth a visit as such even if you don't go there at least once a week like I do. Between that and the Trader Joe's on 22nd and Market, I get everything I need.

So what's orientation like at Penn?

My parents are planning to come to Penn for White Coat Ceremony. Will I have time to spend with them during Orientation if they come up a few days early, or are we busy all day long?

you're kept pretty busy during orientation - i felt like i didn't have much time to spend with my parents but we went to dinner and i think they set up some of my furniture-

a.

What's up people? Where is everybody. I thought we would have a lot of discussions on here after Penn Preview. Anyway, Penn Preview was great and I met so many wonderful people. What are your opinions of Penn/Penn preview. Discuss.....

Anyone know what type of computers Penn suggests? (ie Mac vs PC)

Does Penn offer special deals on laptops and software to incoming med students?

There is no suggested type of computer. A lot of students buy the Enounce 2xAV software to watch lectures at a faster speed (best $30 ever spent), so I'd google that and make sure it's mac compatible. But if anything, all the school computers have the software installed.

Penn has a computer store set up for all students, with some pretty decent discounts. If you're getting a Mac, I think it's a little cheaper than the standard Apple education store with a better warranty thrown in. Check it out
http://www.business-services.upenn.edu/computerstore/

you need to have your PennKey set up to access the store

Alright ladies and gentlemen, as of now, I am officially Penn Med bound! Who's with me! Let's go!

I know multiple people came off the waitlist before May 15. I'm not sure about post May 15 movement.

That's disheartening - I too am waitlisted at Penn. ChocolateKiss, I saw you declined at Michigan over Penn...do you mind sharing why? I really liked Penn a lot, but I think I'm going to face a big dilemma if I get in, because Michigan will likely be much more affordable (I'm in state there, and they've given me some aid)...I'm trying to get a handle on how generous Penn is. I remember from the interview day that they bragged a fair amount about their deep pockets. At the risk of sounding crude, can any of you give me some idea of how likely it is to get some sort of aid beyond loans? FYI I'd consider myself middle-middle class, and I am independent of my parents, working as a hs teacher (not that that really matters, but ya know).

thanks guys, and congrats to all of you for getting in...I'm quite envious <g>.

Ditto on the envious! I am currently in the process of flooding the admissions office with updates, additional LORs, transcripts. I hope it helps!

Maybe this is a stupid question, but what exactly are you saying when you're calling admissions offices? It just seems like I have nothing to say other than "hey, I called you...so let me in." Selling myself like that is definately not my strong suit. How are you getting them to take note of you as you call?

I didn't call. I am sending stuff. Well, actually, I called once and talked to the secretary who told me to "go read the F.A.Q.'s on the admissions website." I don't think calling will get you very far unless you somehow get to talk to the Dean or someone who has some say in the decision.

Yeah, I've sent to letters already, and have run out of stuff to say. Maybe I'll try flaunting my new Michigan scholarship "hey look, I'm still interested in Penn even if I have to pay up the nose!"

Just sent you a PM to answer your questions.

I am druunnk right now.... I just finished my last final as an undergrad... it's 5 am and no one in my house is up, so I thought I would post here. Penn preview was f***ing great.... More people should post about it. I'm surprised that not that many people are posting on this thread, because I know I am excited to leave Ithaca, NY for a place that doesn't close down at 1 am.

I am really interested to know if I met any of you at Penn Preview, esp. Chocolate Kiss cuz she posts so much on this thread... To start things off, I was the one from Cornell Undergrad, I have brown hair flipped up, and I got wasted at that night we went to DreamZZZZZZZ... actually, then I went to the Bar next door and danced to Journey and Bon Jovi.... never had a better time in my life.

I never been so psyched to go to a school in my life... everyone seems so down-to-earth and outgoing. Did anyone else hear the rumors that the school alternates on cool vs. studious classes? Supposedly next year is a cool one!

Oh, and to answer your question about the waitlists... I plan to live next year with someone who got in off the Penn Preview + waitlist, so there is some movement.

Penn is the best place in the world, and the preview actually got me excited to start school next year.

So I finally set up my Pennkey. Did you guys recieve the letter instructing you on how to do so? After you set up your pennkey, don't forget to check out the Guide to first year. I thought it was pretty cool.

You can also log in and check out the virtual curriculum (see online videos of lectures) and also apply for your e-mail address.

Has anyone else not gotten the penn key yet? :-(

So I finally got my email working. I feel so official. ChocolateKiss is your email working? There seem to be no activity on this page. Oh well!

ChocolateKiss said:

Orientation Question

To current Penn students- The Orientation info was just posted on our status pages. It seems like we're scheduled from morning to night.

My question: How much of the stuff is mandatory? I know the actual Orientation Sessions are mandatory, but are all the other activities mandatory as well? (ie tours, dinners). And does it really take 4 hours to get school photos and IDs and such?

The reason I ask is as follows: My parents were thinking of taking time off work and flying cross country to be at the White Coast Ceremony, but they only want to do this if they can also spend a little time with me during Orientation (ie at least go out to dinner, see me in the evening). While these small group dinner things sound like a fun social opportunity, I'm just wondering if they're mandatory.

Thanks for the info.

Good questions, Chocolate. I have another to add: Has anyone in the Philly area heard any more about the rumored South Street bridge closing? I'm in the thick of online apartment shopping (yeah not a great way to do it, I'm aware) and it'd be helpful to know if that bridge is going to be out.
