Hey - has anyone out-of-state gotten the Univ of Wisconsin secondary yet? Thanks!

I recieved an email invite to fill out their secondary on August 13th. My AMCAS was submitted and verified in early June. Stats: 37R/3.7, MN resident. Pretty straightforward secondary. I've cut and pasted the essays below. There are a couple other things to fill out, life activities, etc., but nothing out of the ordinary. Hope this helps and good luck in the process.

PP

Required Essay

What events in your life influenced your decision to become a physician?
(Limit response to 500 words). This should be an original essay written and edited by you and different from the AMCAS essay.

Optional Essay

What additional information, if any, would you wish to provide the Admissions Committee that you think would be important in the evaluation of your candidacy? You may include anything in this essay that you feel is relevant.

For example, many applicants have encountered various challenges in their backgrounds (e.g., coming from a low-income family, having to work a large number of hours per week while going to college, experiencing educational disadvantages in their pre-college years, following an unusually difficult course of study, changes in schools, time away from school, etc.). The Admissions Committee takes many factors into consideration when assessing performance. If your path to medicine has not been direct, please elaborate. If you feel that you have encountered significant disadvantages and would like the Admissions Committee to take them into consideration, you are invited (not required) to provide this additional information.

Re-applicant Essay

Individuals who are reapplying are required to submit a statement indicating what has changed since the previous application (e.g., additional academic work, new letters of evaluation, work or volunteer experience, etc.).

You guys are wasting your time 😛

I got my rejection letter as well this Saturday (don't you love how those always seem to come on the weekends?) My stats are as follows, for what it's worth:

3.58 overall/3.45 BCPM

Heh, my Wisc rejection was accompanied by an interview offer to one of my top 5, so I wasn't too upset 🙂

I also got an invitation to apply aug. 13th. it is certainly difficult to gain admission to madison as an out of state student, but not impossible...according to the uw website, 56/181 nonresidents were accepted in 2003.

i dont think i'm wasting my time...

I am not sure what you mean with the 181 non residents in your ratio
but of the ~1800 applicants over 70% are nonresidents

only 15% of the matriculating class of ~150 is nonresident

Ok, you guys have no clue what you are talking about. You are forgetting about med scholars, a program that automatically accepts people into med school out of HS, we have a lot of them this year. You are also forgetting preference to UW madison. Very, very few out of state, out of UW students get in. I can PM you the scale you are graded on...we start at 3, you start at 0, and you get half points for things like GPA and MCAT....so I think you get the idea.

Yes, the 181 number is the amount of people who actually completed their application.

Good luck to those nonresidents competing for a spot. Madison is a great town.

I think you spent too much time in Uganda and not enough time partying in Mad town....what major did you get the 4 in?

Well, MSTP programs don't have a large in-state bias, so I got a Wisconsin secondary at least.

Actually you are golden. They won't take WI students for it...and man, what a great place to do research. Stem cells, biochem, cancer...some of the best medical research in the world. I know someone from class who did MSTP and bought a house...and they want you guys to take anatomy over the summer, I think they are big in getting you out quickly as possible.

Ok, since so many people PM'd me about this, and no one on SDN has ever posted an exact method by which an Adcom works, here it goes:

Instate start at 3, out of state 0, 6 is auto acceptance. These things all get you half a point:

30+ mcat...they don't look at each section
Transcript Score (gpa, school, major, upward trend)
400 hours of volunteering
Age
URM
LOR
Interview
Essay
Research
Work experience
PS
A few others maybe.

This is just where it starts, I found all of this out because my friend's advisor is the dean. There is a whole process to awarding the points, and 6 is an auto invite, and you can still be invited either way. They have a system for it all...they even have a system for scoring points to see if you get the "big" half a point. Your transcripts receive a score from everyone on the adcom, then the person who gives you the highest score defends you, then everyone scores again....if you meet some other random score (which having a 3.8 will lock for you) you get the half a point This process works for every half point, although some are more simple than others. It is confusing, but after hearing all of it, as long as my letters and interview are good, I know for sure I will get in. I hope that helps...really a crazy system.

ok Adam, I have a question about the U Wis secondary. I know you posted before that the secondary cant be submitted until Sept 1, but how do you know that? I can't find that date anywhere. I have filled in all the information and the site wont let me submit the application. It shows an incomplete next to my LORS; does this mean I have to wait until they receive my letters before I can submit or do I just have to wait until Sept 1.

It is on the submit page...maybe they can see it, but I bet they use amcas for the interview selection. You'll see it if you try and submit....where do you live in WI?

I am not from WI. I am from Iowa. I see from your previos posts that my chances are slim to none to get in, but I shadowed a Cardiologist that did his residency and internship in cardiology at WI. I really respect him and I am interested in also becoming a cardiologist, so I am trying to follow in his footstpes... ...hopefully.

Good luck man :luck: Remember you can go anywhere and be the type of doctor he is! It will be tough...maybe you should write them and tell them how much you love them.

How did you swing that residency, parents still live there?
