Hi Friends!

I got accepted to both UAB and NSU, and am having a tough time deciding between the two. I love the small class size of UAB and the city of Birmingham is so cool- they even gave me a Merit Scholarship of $16,000 which makes their annual tuition about $38k for me out of state.
On the other hand, NSU is in state for me so tuition is about $32k, but I am a little less partial to staying in Florida with the hot weather. The school seems great but the class sizes are huge and I'm worried I'll be lost in the shuffle there.
Does anyone have any thoughts on the two schools, opinions, or stories you've heard from current students or graduates? Anything is helpful, I'm really torn! Thanks guys.

I interviewed and was accepted at both schools as well. I thought the UAB program was nice. The small class and the building all to yourself is great. NSU felt too busy and the students weren't happy there.

I’ve heard from a lot of people that UAB is quite different from most Optometry Schools.

They are super super hard. 3 people failed one year and now are repeating the second year.

Where did you hear this and how can you prove it? I feel that sometimes some student just don’t work out at programs either. Only 3 students having to redo a year for whatever reason out of a class of ~100 is not necessarily a bad sign imo.

Personally I have heard better things about UAB. And the fact they have offered you a scholarship shows that they are serious about having you as a student, which to me, speaks a lot about the school and admissions.
NSU has seemed just ok to me and others I’ve discussed with. The common story is that they overall don’t seem as close knit as a community/school and it seems a lot of that has to do with the large class size, but also just the overall feeling and treatment by the OD’s, admissions, and other students.
4 years is a long time to not feel connected to a school and its professors, so personally I would feel much better being with a class and school that is more close knit where I can not only make better connections, but feel more welcomed.
