Has anyone had interviews or have an insight on UAB?

I am a student at UABSO, and can try to provide you with a little insight into the interviewing process. Interviews are conducted on Tuesdays and Fridays. You will interview with a relatively small group of about 4-8 people, that is to say there are 4-8 other people being interviewed on the day you interview, they will of course not be in the room with you while you are being interviewed. For me the interview was relatively laidback. If the interview is still the same as last year, there are two main interviews, one with a panel of 3-4 people from the admissions committee, and another open file, 1 on 1, interview. In addition to the interviews a student gives a tour of the school, you will eat lunch, and there is a short discussion on financial aid.
Overall the process is relatively painless, and if you are not too nervous can be quite fun. Just make sure to relax, and give the best and most honest representation of yourself as you possibly can.

I just got an accpetance from UAB. Since there seems to be very little said about UAB maybe we, future and current students, can use this thread to converse.

I interviewed there friday and I'm not sure how it went. Friday was the very last day for interviews, or at least that is what they told me. I kind of felt that everyone was tired of the whole process, and I wasn't sure what to think about it all. Its a great school though. They said I should find out if I was accepted next week sometime. Can I ask what your OAT and GPA are?? also did you kind of feel that they were acting that way too??

Any info you want to give would be very helpful

Last week was fairly busy and stressful for most of us, with lots of midterm exams. I myself did not even notice any interviewees sitting in the lobby on Friday like I normally do, probably because I was cramming. Most students like to stop and say hey to the interviewees to try to make them feel welcome, we know interviewing is stressful, we have all been there. I hope some current students were able to take some time out of their day to talk to you a little. It is one thing to hear about how great a school is from the administration and faculty, it is yet another to hear honest opinions directly from the horses mouth (current students). I know that is part of the reason I chose to go to UAB. The students were so welcoming, honest about how difficult school was going to be, but most of all enthusiastically felt that they were receiving a great education.

Everybody come to the spring visit, you will be sure to have a great time, and it is great to meet all of your future classmates. We all look forward to meeting you in March.

I interviewed before I got my OAT scores and I was told at the exit interview that the fact I was interviewing almost guarnteed an acceptance. So don't sweat it. I was also told that it is not that hard to become a resident of AL so if tuition is a factor that may help.

Well I've been accepted to UAB!(I'm kinda late on the post) ICO and Nova also accepted me, but UAB I think is perfect for me. Can anyone tell me where abouts in Birmingham do most students live? I've been looking at apartments online, trying to figure out what parts are "safe", etc. I'm definetely coming out for the Spring Visit to look at places too. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi! I'm a first year at UABSO. Just to answer a few questions I have seen: my GPA was a 3.5 when I was accepted (a 3.4 when I graduated) and my OAT was a 350.
Most students here in Birmingham live either in Hoover, the Highway 280 area, or in Homewood off Lakeshore Drive. This should give you a few good ideas when looking for an apartment. Definitely plan on coming to the spring visit (I think it is in March). They have apartment consultants on hand and it is free for you to use them. It is also really helpful to come to spring visit if you are looking for a roommate.

I just found out I have been accepted!!!! 😀 ok, now I have also been accepted to Pacific and probably will hear later this week from UHCO that I have been accepted. Those of you that go there, can you tell me a little about the positives and negatives about the school??? When I had my interview I had a horrible night before and couldn't sleep and was very tense the whole time. So I would like some of yall input because i know its a great school!

First, I noticed that the clinic seemed very empty the whole time I was there. How many patients do yall see before you graduate? Do you feel you get a look range of diseases and a good amount of children in the clinic? (I think I want to specialize in children or ocular disease).

Also, one thing I really liked about the school was the research opportunities. I work in a myopia lab now and I really enjoy it. Do a lot of people take advantage of these opportunities?

ok this might be silly, but were do yall park?? in the parking garage across the street or some place far far away?

How is the student to teacher relationship? I come from a small undergrad were everyone is very helpful. Teachers here actually have office hours and if I have a problem with something in class I can always just go talk to them about it. Are teachers there pretty helpful?

Also can you tell me a little about the 2 externship that UAB has? Are they mainly in Alabama or all over the US? Are their any outside the US?

I am a first year student at UAB, so I dont' know a lot of information about the clinic and exactly the number of patients they see a day, but I will try to provide some insight into the other questions.

As far as the student to teacher ratio goes, I consider it to be very good. My class has 40 students and almost all of our teachers know our names, and do a very good job of keeping the classes very personable. I was very impressed with the ratio and how the classroom atmosphere feels.

We park about a block or two down the street in a lot that is only for 1st and 2nd year optometry, dental, and medical students.

I do know that there is an opportunity available for all outlets of research and students are encouraged to participate if they want too. I believe we have atleast 2 students who have already participated in research since starting in the fall.

I hope this helps and hopefully someone with more knowledge will give more insight on the other questions.

just thought i'd throw it out there... hoover and highway 280 is a GREAT place to live if you are not familiar with birmingham and will be attending UAB.

i'm from the area and can't wait to return here for school (although i'll be a dental school applicant)
