What does that have to do with anything? Mass General and Wash U have a lot of FMG's also. You have to remember that many FMG's who get radiology are on their second career path. Many have already finished radiology residencies abroad or other residencies. Some of the top programs are filled with many FMG's. Sure, Little Rock may not be for everyone, but neither is St. Louis. Some people do not want to live in large cities. I would get extremely worried if residents were unhappy and board passing rates were low. Last I checked, I remember UAMS saying that they had high board passing rates. If I was a PD, I would take a hard working, well-qualified FMG's in a heart beat.

Does anyone know why UAMS has numerous IMGs in their radiology residency? In my experience it is unusual to see that in a field as competitive as radiology.

If it turns you off that much, don't apply there. For all others who are serious about a radiology residency-- I encourage all to apply broadly, radiology is once again a very competitive field. Be grateful for the interviews you get because there are others that aren't so fortunate.

Whoa there buddy. I was just making an observation. No need to get all fired up. What do you mean what does that have to do with anything? Location definitely matters. If you are suggesting that FMGs/IMGs are on equal footing as USMGs, stop kidding yourself. Can FMGs/IMGs match? Yes, but you'll see it more commonly at lower tier places and less desirable programs.

The radiology program at UAMS does not have any more FMG's than other regional radiology program. Just because someone has a name that doesn't sound like a WASP doesn't mean they're a FMG.

Obviously, if these FMG's were able to match into radiology, they probably had higher board scores/qualifications than other allo grads. Almost every top program has FMG's. Many top state programs have FMG's. This is a topic that has been covered time and time again on auntminnie. Each time, people give a long list of programs that are top programs with many FMG's present. I know my program has a few FMG's, each of them have already completed residencies in outside countries. They do awesome on their boards and work hard, and I matched at a well regarded program.
I have never seen UAMS listed as "lower tier or less desirable". I know many attendings who spoke very highly about their program when I was on the interview trail. Don't know if it means anything to anyone, but it made p53's list of "honorable mentions."

It is my understanding that doctors with the degree "MBBS" are FMGs.

True, it is a medical degree from India which is similar to an MD...from what I understand.

I interviewed at UAMS, and that program is quite strong. They have top of the line CTs and MRs, great attendings, new facilities, and everyone is super nice. As far as Little Rock goes, whatever...its radiology residency, and i will be happy getting in anywhere so long as it is at a decent program!

I see your point exPCM. There was a year where nearly all of the residents were FMG's. I am a student at UAMS. I apologize if I came across as defensive. I suppose I just took it personally.

Anyhow, I cannot explain why that residency class was full of FMG's. There hasn't been any problems as far as I know of to explain this. Maybe they just got alot of outstanding applicants from India that year. Whatever the case, UAMS has a great radiology program. All of the residents and attendings I have interacted with have been really nice. I get the sense that they are happy to be in the program. We don't get the respect we deserve by virtue of our location (which is completely a false appraisal as far as I'm concerned).

Just to clarify, an MBBS is not necessarily from India. It can be from Ireland, England, Australia etc. Also, in those countries an "M.D." is actually a research based degree attained after the completion of an MBBS.

Having interviewed at UAMS and "top places", I can affirm the fact that the FMG's interviewing at these spots are truly outstanding-- MD/PhD's, ten's of publications, huge board scores. To me the only thing their presence demonstrates is that a program is open-minded (which is a + IMO).

As far as UAMS is concerned, the program is incredibly solid and also has a strong reputation at least regionally (not sure how well the name plays in NE where the thought is that everyone south of NJ has 3 teeth & marries their sisster). It should also be noted that they have a fairly large # of positions (I believe 9 at this point), and that they only interview ~50 applicants total.

I'm ranking UAMS quite highly actually, over multiple "big names" in radiology.

Good luck.

I have a friend who is a rad resident at UAMS. He loves the program. I interviewed for rads at UAMS last year and found it to be a very solid program. It was high on my rank list and I placed it higher than some top-notch places (Mayo, Duke). Their best kept secret is the easy intern year. The program is very open: they'll take DOs and FMGs...but only the mega-smart ones. I remember reading on their website that most residents have 230+ board scores. I know my buddy had mid 240s and I have similar scores and interviewed. Also, my buddy was telling me their fellowship placement is amazing. Last year: Peds at Boston Children's, Body at MGH, MRI and IR at UC sacramento, IR at Yale, MSK at Mallinkrodt.
