UAMS in Arkansas and Creighton University in Phoenix. UAMS is a public school and way cheaper, especially since I was offered in-state tuition. UAMS does have internal rank though. Creighton is a private school, so it’s more expensive no matter what. The cost difference over four years is more than $130,000. I’d need to take out loans to cover everything either way. If federal Grad PLUS loans stay in place, I can borrow the full amount for both schools with flexible repayment options. But if those loans get cut—I’d have to take out private loans for Creighton, which are riskier and less forgiving. I’m aiming for a surgical specialty like ortho, which pays well, so I could handle the debt, but I’d start with a much heavier burden if I choose Creighton. UAMS would give me more financial breathing room no matter what. Creighton however i think has a curriculum more suited for my style off learning with TBL and CBL style classes that offer a lot more hands on critical thinking and application during pre-clinicals. I also like the area more especially it being closer to home (west coast) and likely giving me easier access to do away rotations at hospitals in california. So I’m torn between choosing a school I might like more lifestyle wise but that’s more expensive and riskier, or going with the cheaper option that gives me more flexibility after graduation but will likely have to sacrifice close proximity to my support system for four years to move back to a small (but home) town. Also my family lives in SD now but i’m originally from arkansas and still have a couple friends in the area.

my vote is UAMS. 130k extra at 8-9% interest is more like 160k at the end of 4 years. the cost of living will also be far less in Arkansas. by your post it seems you are far more in love with the phoenix area, but I would caution you to really consider the costs of tuition and living before you bite the bullet on this
