I was born and raised in TX, went to college in AR.

UAMS (Little Rock)
Pros
  • I like the slower pace of Arkansas, plus people are way nicer than Texas
  • Already have several friends in Little Rock
  • very nice weather

Cons
  • Most people match somewhere in the south, which I REALLY do not want to stay in
  • 50k more in tuition

UTMB
Pros
  • More people matched into surgery
  • Very close to my parents (this is a big factor)
  • higher ranked school

Cons
  • I would have to stay in Texas for 4 more years
  • mandatory lectures
  • humidity sucks
Summary: I'm leaning towards UAMS right now just because I hate Texas, but I've never been to Galveston. My main concerns with UAMS would be the difficulty of matching into surgery in a different state.

you have said so many times how much you crave leaving Texas - going to Arkansas seems to be your chance
You can apply to residencies anywhere at all.
Haha that's very true, but I feel like Galveston is a lot different than Dallas/Houston/Austin. I suppose the only way to know for sure is to spend a couple days there...

Also, am I wrong in assuming that residencies prefer applicants that live/have lived close to their program? (like most medical schools do)

I appreciate your help

Not as much as for med schools.

Many people every year rank UTMB lower because they would rather live in Houston, Dallas, Austin, etc, over Galveston. It is not exactly a desirable location to be at in Texas.
