Hi Everybody,

I was just wondering if it is better to send in the application earlier with a not so good pcat score or have the application 'delayed' (later than normal applicants)by taking the pcat in January (say, i did really good). Would i have less chance of getting in if i send it in later? I'm afraid that it'll be too late. >.<

PS my friend just told me that for UB it is REALLY hard to get in and that ppl less than GPA 3.9 don't get cause its that competitive... my math and sci gpa is 3.60 with no pharmacy experience except shadowing a pharmacist for a few hours.

Hi,

I'm in the same boat as you. I PMed two SDN members who currently attend UB and asked them that very same question. Both encouraged me to submit my application and take the January PCAT. It will be more competitive for us since they are already sending out interviews, but it's worth a try. My GPA is similar to yours. I believe they accept people with GPAs below 3.9. I applied last year and although I got denied, they encouraged me to apply again and my GPA was a 3.6 overall with a 3.5 in Math/Sci, so don't always believe what people tell you. Ask the school directly if you are unsure. Good luck to us both!!! 🙂

Thanks! If you don't mind me asking, did you apply last year as a reg, transfer or EA?

Submitting your PCAT in January is fine. Also, UB looks at a student's overall profile! A 3.9 is not necessary or mandatory for students, but it would definitely helps. I did not get a 3.9 or anywhere near that lol and I am currently a P1. Good luck to you both!

I am applying to UB. I just took today's PCAT and I am not sure if I am taking PCAT in January. However, chances are likely that I will take it in Jan.
Now the problem is that UB supplemental application asks us when we took or are taking PCAT. On that if i select both oct 18 and jan date, and afterwards do not write Jan pcat, what can happen?

You mean put in that you are taking the Jan PCAT, but didn't in the end? Taking the PCAT is your choice. If you select that you will be taking it in Jan, it gives them a heads up that there might be another score to look for. If you decided not to, you can always contact them to update your application and notify them about the change if you already sent in your application on PharmCAS. Good luck!

Thanks, do you mind giving your stats or pcat scores if any (if your comfortable) 🙂

sure..when I applied my math and science was 3.3 and overall was 3.5 or 3.7 I don't actually recall right now, PCAT was 428 or 91. However, I just want to guys to know that my math and sci GPA was on the low side due to a personal reason. UB do look at the applicants whole profile. Anyways, our class profile is probably more of use than my own personal stat. They had 1,200 applicants last year. Good luck, and I do love it here!

Wow! Your pcat scores is really high. Congrats on that 😀. How long did you study for that? I'm taking mine in Jan and have been looking at the Kaplan review..how did you study?

lol thanks..well truthfully, I invested about 36 hours into studying the PCAT. I was paranoid because I had tests to prepare for that same week (I took it in Aug and Oct) and it was my last chance to do better. If you were wondering why I retook it, the first time I did it, I was really sick and some how scored a 360 or 3 percentile in chemistry (my friend was like how the hell did you get that..lol maybe cause my brain wasn't functioning?) and it brought my score down way low to a 398 or 47 percentile score. I wish I had more time to prepare for the PCAT my second time, but I didn't. I just studied the prep review materials in the Kaplan prep book, and did a couple of problems. This time I was not sick however, and did much much better thank goodness. I am actually looking at it now and its 428 instead of 420 my bad...i don't really keep track of this thing after its over...

tips for PCAT: round everything for computation. Your answer will we obvious since it falls withing the rounding range. I scored really high in computation because of this 438 or 93. I also did all the easy problems first and then go back when I have time to solve the harder ones. It helps me when I work from the back to front instead of the other way around. Good luck!
