just interviewed at U of MN last friday. If I get in there I'm withdrawing from UB, otherwise I'll be heading to Buffalo next year. I should hear back by May 15th about acceptance/waitlist/withdraw at the U of MN.
 
for appartments try

that's from UB off campus housing site. Some are per bedroom and some are per appt. These tend to be a tad more expensive IMO, but you may be able to find a deal
 
is there anyone from buffalo who knows which areas are safe or better?

Then, when I mentioned that I was in the middle third someone again copy pasted Sekem's info and replaced my name but it still read bottom third....that may or may not have helped. lol Either way, I'm not offended, just want to be accurate. Yeah that's exactly what happened. After you guys posted that you changed status (which I didn't read) someone else had copied and pasted their name into the list, leaving both Sekem and Dr. George still reading "bottom 1/3" but in blue letters written in the middle 1/3 section. So I just put the names in the bottom third section because I thought you were in the bottom 1/3. My mistake I guess, was just trying to organize. Sorry guys, but I'm glad you were able to figure out that I was not trying to snub, just organize someone's messed up post.

Fair enough, but what ingemar said about bringing someone else down into the bottom third doesn't matter, since it doesn't actually matter whether someone is in which third, so long as their place in line remains the same, so anybody above you simply wouldn't be affected, only people below you would get a slightly shorter wait time (if it gets that far).

Anyways, it's your app so obviously it's up to you when you feel comfortable withdrawing or whatever, although it might be a little bit of a wait to find out if you got in or not since it seemed like some of the bottom 1/3rd people got calls in late July or even August based on previous years.

Housing is definitely very cheap, although it seems like it's cheaper if you live in someone's house as an apartment versus like, a newer apartment complex or something.

I'm almost tempted to go buy a condo or something instead of just renting, lol.

Guess we'll see if I get into Downstate or not...since I probably shouldn't make any housing decisions until I have that figured out.

Last year, we received a pretty nice and helpful list of places to check out that was compiled by the other med students for the incoming class. My colleagues are currently piecing together a new list for y'all that should be distributed before housing weekend rolls around.

Did I mention that housing's cheap? For what I'm paying now to live alone, last year I was living in a hole in the wall with a roommate in a major city. It's very refreshing if that's the kind of situation you're leaving to come here.

yeah thanks noeljan, great site...i found a roommate and apt that was perfect for me, except that her move-in date was early july. hopefully other good openings will pop up later

do you guys think we'll hear this week about waitlist movement?
 
How do you guys find out about movement in the waitlist? To find out I was in the middle 1/3 I had to call the school. Is there like an email or something they send out? On my status page it just says waitlist.

we'll probably get waitlist movement next week and the following week cause I think they still have to wait for people to accept or decline their acceptance. but this week waitlist movement would be nice.....

I am sooo tired, yukky I have my last exam ever of grad school at 3pm and I couldnt sleep much for the last two nights, yippie.....After today though, no more classes till med school on Aug6th, yay so excited!!!!
 
hmmm, i can't log into my status page again...the last time this happened they updated my page. maybe they've made some final decisions or maybe i'm reading too deep into this...

I don't know that they're supposed to tell us anything...

I would guess that by tomorrow they would have the final waitlist determined though. At which point we could call and see which third we're in for the long haul... but I wouldn't expect to be contacted for anything short of an acceptance.

Edit: Emphasis on guess in the above statement.
 
Guys, we all need to calm down, they will not start telling us that soon so stop refreshing your status page, get the hell out, and go and have fun. I would not expect any movement till May 15th even though theoretically they are done with the process.

Weather is B E A U tiful so go to the beach or do something but stop stressing out and wasting your time ...

We all have less than 3 months left so go get busy!!! :laugh:
 
i'd love to, but i'm finishing up my thesis right now, checking my status page IS my break 😀

does UB waitlist actually depend on this date though? i thought that they kind of generated this huge waitlist so they could keep spots open for every single person that interviewed, and that once they finished, they could then start sending out mass acceptances based on rankings. i didn't get the impression that we had to wait for people to withdraw before we started hearing good news
 
yea, i'd have to agree with Herecomesthesun because that's my impression of the school too; that's why there are so many people on the waitlist. but they do accept some students right away!
 
I agree. I don't think the class is full yet. They probably set the waitlist up this way to somehow weed out those that do not really want to go to UB. Those that received acceptances eslewhere, and that have been waitlisted at UB, will probably not want to attend UB because they were waitlisted. That is not me, however. UB is the place to be!!
 
Also, there is no way there are 300 people on the waitlist. Think about it this way: for the past several years UB has had to go down to the top bottom third of the waitlist (that would be almost ~225 students if there were 300 waitlisters). If there were ~300 people on the waitlist, then that would mean that in the past several years 150 accepted students withdrew their acceptances (that's the entire class !!! ). We know this is not possible. So, 150- 200 on the waitlist, probably 70-80 immediately accepted already. If those that were accepted (~70) do not withdraw (which is not the case) then the entire upperthird would get accepted and maybe only half of those in the upper third would accept the offer. Then there comes the middle third and then the bottom third. It makes sense.

It's a great school !!! I know because I am finishing my undergrad here. I hope all us SDNers get in. We'll find out after May 15th.
