Is UC Davis Med Ctr such a bad place? After looking at this year's and past years' unfilled lists, UC Davis really is spattered across the fields with unfilled spots. I really want to know about this place and if there are any explanations. Thank you.

Something really isn't right about this program. Yes, it isn't is the most happening of California communities, but it is in Cali and its UC!!!

Uh... so does that mean they didn't fill all anesthesia spots??!!

I think UCD is a great place (I'm biased since I was there for 7 years). I think lots of applicants were being real picky this year, and UCD programs may not have ranked enough... I don't know...

I sent u PM.

Don't know specifically about anesthesia and Davis. But, I've seen this consistently since 2002 (my oldest records)...

UC Davis Neuro Program is on probation. Not the first one. They have a lot of problems with hours, teaching/educational activities, attendings, VA rotations, etc. I had an interview there this year, and despite this place was the most desirable for me due to location/family issues and that I estimated my overall chances to get into residency as very poor (old IMG), I still ranked them last on my ROL.

Oh..... You got my hopes up :diebanana:! I thought you were basing this on the current unfilled list. I don't think UCD is unfilled across the board. In fact, I have the open list from the NRMP website for 2005-2009, and they are not unfilled across the board... just in neuro (2009), 5 FM (2009), and prelim surgery (no big surprise there). You smoking something good over there??? :slap:

After match day, are ALL positions listed that didn't fill on Monday? Or just the "remaining" positions that didn't fill after people took them in the scramble?

Some programs have problems with a given field, but more than four and five, then something might be institutional.

I'm a recent UCDSOM grad and am not really sure what you are referring to about Davis not filling across the board in the past few years. I do not have access to this year's unfilled results, but in the past it seemed like the only things that did not fill at Davis were a few spots in Family Medicine and prelim Surgery. One year Rad-Onc was not in the match for their spots. Overall, most of the residents I worked with at Davis were happy with their programs and I think I had a really strong clinical experience there in medical school. A significant portion of my class (at least 1/3) stayed on for residency. Sacramento is not the ideal place to live for some, so they may not rank it highly. But unless things have substantially changed in the last 2 years, I find it really hard to believe that it has become a bad place to train.

When the final match reports are released next week, it will include the exact data for all programs in the match. The match tables don't separate those programs that filled from those that didn't, so you need to search through the whole thing to figure out who didn't fill. The list of "remaining" positions becomes rapidly unreliable.

Last year 2 out of 4 neuro spots were unfilled

For '09, UC Davis had unfilled positions in family medicine, neurology, pathology, and prelim surgery. For '10, I will comment only after the list is released from the NRMP. I never said it was a bad place, but I am trying to find out why there are so many unfilled spots from this one medical center over the past several years.

Perhaps I should have clarified that I graduated in '08. I'd heard from others who were in the '09 match that only FP and prelim surgery went unfilled, which was consistent with what had been happening in prior years. It sounds like the other poster had a pretty good explanation for neurology. Other than potentially undesirable location, I can't really think of any systemic reasons why multiple programs aren't filling based on what I saw when I was there and what I have heard from current residents there.

The prelim surgery spot at UCD is only done out of the match (as someone whose friends did it). The FM program and neuro programs have had problems, the neuro program especially is apparently on probation, etc. But thats basically it--most places have a few unfilled spots every year. If you are interested in FP and neuro I can imagine that giving you pause, but once again these are program specific issues (the FP program isnt unopposed and is part of a large academic program whereas most classically desirable fp programs are more community based an unopposed while the neuro residents are run ragged and have hours issues). UCD is also expanding several residencies and as such have spots they can offer after the match takes place (after acgme approves expansion, etc)--this has been the case for urology a few times (expanded from 1 to two residents then 2 to 3 residents).

I have heard the neuro program has had some badness (see above) but I don't think there are any big systemic problems @the hospital that I have heard of.

Speaking of unfilled residencies at UCD, does anyone have any info/feedback on the path program there?

More to the point, besides this site (SDN) and scutwork.com are there any other program review sites out there?

Thanks!!
