Rural-PRIME is part of the University of California's "Programs in Medical Education." It is designed to produce physician leaders who are trained in and committed to helping California's underserved communities. This unique program is designed to train the best and the brightest students for a fulfilling career in rural primary care medicine. It is an opportunity that offers a range of experiences, from public health and community service to the use of leading-edge medical technologies like telemedicine.
Please respond to the questions provided should you be interested in being considered for this program.

Does anyone have any "inside" details about this program? I know it's new...but I'm just trying to figure out if it's something I should apply to. I don't have any experience with Rural medicine....though I have participated on medical mission trips to Mexico, so I'm not sure if that would count.

Do you UCD applicants plan on applying to this program? Do they first have to accept you to the 1st year class before considering you for this program? or is there a separate adcom for this program? I guess what i'm asking is if applying to this program separates you out from the overall applicant pool.

thx

I don't know too many of the answers to your questions, but I do know that you HAVE TO do one year (or six months...something like that) of your rotations in a rural community (more rural than Davis). An admissions person came and spoke at my school and talked about the PRIME program. They will ship you to the middle of nowhere in California...so make sure that is what you want before you apply.

I'm at UCD and know a few folks in the PRIME program. It's brand new (I think this year is either its first or second year) and only took 12 folks this year.

I would not apply just because the idea of rural med seems kind of cool. Your rotations will be very focused on rural medicine, which means a good number of your core third year rotations will be in a rural environment (for Peds and Med, I believe), which will necessitate moving and being in a very different environment. Much of your fourth year will be "encouraged" to be spent outside of Sacramento as well.

I'm not saying this to discourage any applicants. If you're interested in rural med, this program would be fantastic. It's very strong on self-reliance, telemed, and such. But I wouldn't apply unless you're committed to the rural underserved, because second thoughts would be an ugly thing while you're out for three months at a rural clinic somewhere.

I think that you actually have to practice in a rural setting too, from what I heard at the information meeting.

Davis is okay, huh?
