So essay #5 out of 10^9 says:

"If the practice of medicine ceased to exist - there were no physicians, what would you do instead, and why?"

Perhaps I am putting to much thought into interpreting the question, but if the practice of medicine ceased to exist (from the perspective of the UCD adcom, of course), would that also end public health, politics regarding medicine, medical research, etc? Or are they just trying not to ask "If you couldn't be an MD..." so people don't reply "I would be a DO".

What's your take?

they mean the latter. They just don't want any "oh!, I can't imagine myself doing anything else" responses. So it would be appropriate to say health care policy advocate, pharmacist, nurse or something like that- in light of the fact that physicians are now extinct

well..its one of those hard ones..

it could really go both ways..but I find it hard to believe that there could be nurses for example, while there are no physicians..at least in this century..

as far as i know..all health care professionals practice medicine in a way...so if it ceased to exist might mean that not only you can't be a physician..you can't be a nurse either sort of speak.

I clarified myself in the essay..so you might want to do that too: state your interp. of the question, and then answer.

I hope this helped and good luck!

Nothing to do with medicine was my take. You can't be a nurse or a pharmacist or in public health if medicine ceased to exist.

What did you write about?

I just chose another profession that I would be interested in and talked about why I would chose it. They probably just want to see that you have other interests outside of medicine.

I would be a medicine man!!! Or a rock star who can not sing or dance. ewww

Last year I took it to mean the actual practice of medicine, and talked about health policy and things like that. I think they just want to see that you have thought about and explored other things.

They probably want to see if the alternative careers you choose (a) match the personality and values you portray in your application and (b) have parallels to the practice of medicine.

nothing to do with medicine. thats how i did mine last year. they want to see if you have other interests besides medicine that you are interested in. imho this is just a sneaky way to check out your well roundedness. 🙂

This is what I wrote:

The journey towards my decision to become a doctor has led me down several paths. As I have walked, I have learned many things about myself. I have found that I love to work with children. I derive great satisfaction from communicating and teaching and I am thrilled by science and research. I also enjoy being a caregiver. I believe pediatric medicine combines these attributes in an occupation that I would surely love.

If for some reason I could not pursue my dream, I would seek these qualities working as an elementary school science teacher. I also would continue to volunteer as an EMT in emergency medicine. Finally, I would continue to consult in the healthcare field in biostatistics for my love of research. In short, I would try to fulfill my interests and loves not through one single occupation, but through several. Ultimately, being a physician neatly encompasses all of my passions. And so with great enthusiasm I pursue my interest in attending UC Davis medical school!

I thought I was done with the secondary after writing the three short essays. Then I went to the personal information and found that they ask you to explain about how each activity makes you a better doctor. Now I have six more to write.

Yes, thank you Davis for 9 essays times 1500 characters, for a maximum of 13500 characters. I have enjoyed every single one.

I HAVE MASTERED THE DAVIS BEAST!!! Where the F*** is my crown!!??
Ha ha.. just kidding.. I submitted it this mornin! Yee.. Mother F'in HAW

hey, may i ask how you plan to volunteer in the EMC when physicians cease to exist....well, i guess we can call the emergency gods for immediate help. 😉

I think it is possible to take their altered reality too far. I think your question would be an example of that. Another example would be, if physicians ceased to exist then I wouldn't be writing this eassay, so the question is a paradox and logically unanswerable.
