UC Irvine Secondary

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
What're the secondary questions?

UC Irvine on their secondary says that it is mandatory to have 1 year of biochemistry with lab... I wish I knew that. There's no way I'll fulfill that prerequisite.

I'll call them tomorrow.
That pretty much screws over anyone who wasn't a Biochem major. Would you know if this requirement even listed on the MSAR?

yeah, i'm so confused with their class reqs.

1. they used to accept AP credit, now they don't?

2. apparently all pre-reqs must be completed before 8/1/2007?!

Holy crap. If I don't even meet the requirements... I will be pissed.

I think the 1 year of biochem with lab is ridiculous! I don't remember that requirement being there last time I checked their website. If the requirement is new, how were we supposed to know that we should take enough biochem classes before LAST WEEK?

i don't think it's biochem with lab, it think it was biology with lab? i don't know. so confused/sad. *explodes*

What do you guys think? Looks like 1 year of biochemistry with lab...

Interesting. They don't even offer a biochem lab at my school. I did a sem of cell, molecular, biochem (no lab), and like 2-3 other biology courses with lab, hopefully that's enough heh

ugh, i don't know. they are probably able to whittle down the applicants by like 100000 just b/c we didn't fulfill their constantly changing, obscure requirements. *le sigh*

anyone know the status of using APs to fulfill reqs?

I just checked their website and this is what I see:

Requirements for Entering 2008:

Biology
Years: 1.5
Units: 12 semester/16 quarter
Notes: 1 year of Labs. Courses must include one upper-division Biology course.

Chemistry
Years: 2
Units: 16 semester/20 quarter
Notes: 1 year of Labs. Courses must include Inorganic, Organic, and Biochemistry.

Physics
Years: 1
Units: 8 semester/12 quarter

Math
Years: 1
Units: 6 semester/8 quarter
Notes: Courses must included Calculus and Statistics.

English Writing/Composition
Years: 0.5
Units: 3 semester/4 quarter

I haven't received a secondary yet. That screenshot is interesting... I think it definitely warrants a phone call to clarify.

The slightly worrisome thing is that my school has a "premed curriculum" that they tell premeds to follow. It isn't exactly what schools asks for; for example, there are only 2 quarters (not a full year) of biology labs. However, the advising department says that this is fine and that med schools know we don't have a full year. I guess I shouldn't worry because people from my university have gotten into a wide range of schools in the past... so maybe these requirements aren't that rigid?

See, that would be nice... but the actual secondary has contradictory information. Oh well, no point worrying... someone on SDN will call right when it opens and post the result here. Too bad I don't have an upper-division biology course.

i got the email stating they received my AMCAS app..and then 2min later (literally), i get the invite for a secondary (happy 🙂

For that biochem requirement, i don't think they mean 1yr biochem lab.

i think they mean biochemistry (period.) and then 1yr of chem w/ lab (referring to ochem and gchem)

take a look at what it says for biology.

Biology:

3 semesters, must include:
Upper Division (1 semester)
1 yr, laboratory based course

i don't think this would mean 1 year of upper div. courses WITH lab just b/c it's listed under that line

again, this is just my thoughts...but it wouldn't hurt if someone could call and confirm for everyone here

I think that's a little bit crazy, because I did like 3 semesters of only upper divisions sciences, four courses per sem, and I still didn't have a year of biochem with lab haha.

now the only uc i havnet gotten is ucd ... cross fingers!

/me weeps because she has no secondaries yet.
/me checks email, again.

I suppose only being verified yesterday has something to do with it =/

I don't get the issue. 😛 It does NOT say one year biochem.

It says Organic, Inorganic, and Bio CHEMISTRY
+ 1 year of laboratory

There aren't enough slots for me to fill it out. (Qtr system) I'm sure they don't care just give them as many labs and lectures you can cram.

LoL. Yeah. That would be the reason why. It's your silver lining 🙂

What the crap? Three semesters of biology (1 upper div required) AND biochemistry? ARGH. I graduated already. This is what happens when you go to a school without any good premed advising. I thought I had everything covered with 1 year of bio, 1 year of ochem (and of course, the gchem, math physics). For "insurance" I even took biochem.

What's with these Cali schools and these random requirements? USC has screwed me too with its genetics requirement.

did all you guys receive UCI's secondary? My status is pending review for a secondary on the status page 🙁

They probably send it out in batches like the other UCs. Don't worry about it, you'll probably get it soon.

Wow - breathe guys. I don't know how you guys concluded that meant 1 year of biochem lab. It lists all the chemistries and then says it must include a year of lab (your G-chem/O-chem labs). Yes, you have to have taken biochem AT SOME POINT (1 sem is plenty).

For those of you who are really type A - go ahead and call. The admissions office just finished our orientation so they're less busy but exhausted.

And the 2007 thing is obviously a typo.

Breathe in...breathe....now stop panicking or your head will explode long before you get in anywhere.

It was a typo on their part-- look at the image I attached. But the main website has the correct information, so I'm going with that. Calling is unnecessary at this point. Just at first glance I was like ugh, that sucks.

Well, maybe you just assumed things. Yes, biochemistry is in a slightly bigger font than the rest, but come on. To me, it just seemed that they listed the types of chemistry classes you could use for that section.

Update for everyone:

I emailed them earlier and they replied (at 10:30 at night!). The requirement is: 1 year of chemistry lab. Not biochemistry.

And I'm screwed on the upper div bio requirement, so I guess that's the end of my application to UCI. @^%@#$

UCI's prereqs page on the secondary is really BS. They dont realize that some people are on the quarter system (even freakin UCI). There is no way to fit all the required courses in that limited space. Eh, watever.

Yeah. I know. I mentioned that. I would say just make sure the semester units match up.
A year of a lecture course is like 6-8 units.
A year of lab classes is like 2-4 units.
Just to fool proof this... 🙂P)
A semester of a lecture course is 3-4 units.
A semester of a lab course is 1-2 units.

With the chem, I tried to mention advance classes like things with "II" to imply I had to have taken I. 😛 Gotta play the game. I wouldn't sweat it too much. If we bother shelling out the money we can't be expected to not think we'd finish it and if they look hard enough at AMCAS they can deal with it themselves.

How are you guys filling that out? What if my school uses Virtual Evals. Do I just write the name of the letter service or do I put all the names of the recommenders even though the letters will arrive as a packet?

What are you guys doing?

Also, what the heck is relationship? I'm pretty sure it means relationship to you? Or do you guys take it as relationship to the "affiliation" slot?

I'm just confused with this.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!!

My letters are being sent out as a packet by my school's career service center through VirtualEvals as well. I just filled in each individual letter writer's name for that section. For relationship, I just wrote Biology Professor, History Professor, etc. I don't think it really matters too much because my status said that my letters were already received before I even submitted the secondary.
