Hi all,

I've been on SDN for a while but first thread here! I'm planning to apply this upcoming year (entering class of 2015) and was searching around for requirements for med schools. Particularly, I was looking for specific LOR requirements from the UC (University of California ) med schools. I know that the general wisdom is have at least 2 science and 1 non-science but was wondering if anyone (maybe someone who is currently applying) knows what the specific requirements are? I've been able to find them for most schools on their websites but some UC's have been very ambiguous in this regard. I'd really appreciate your help a lot and thanks!

Majority of the ucs just ask for 3 faculty/professors. uci is the only one that specifically wants two science (if i remember correctly), but following the 2 science, 1 non-science will cover your bases anyway 😛

Thanks so much for the info! Would a PI whom I've worked for and received research units for a letter grade qualify as a science faculty under those requirements, including those of UCI? I know that it'd be ideal to get two science professors but I feel that my PI letter would be much stronger because I've worked with him for so long and would rather use his as one of the science faculty letters, if possible.

I was in the same situation as you. I am pretty sure there is a bolded text for uci that says two science professors, not faculty, which implies they had to have taught you for a class. USC is another school that has this rule. For ucla, ucd, etc. They don't specifically ask for 2 science, so if you have one sci prof. And PI you should be okay 🙂

Also keep in mind you can have up to 5 letters! If you could do 2 science, PI, and non science/leadership, you're def. Set for almost every school!

Great, thanks again. I hope your application cycle is going/will go well! By the way, random but we both have 'fishy' in our user names haha
