UC Post Baccs 2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks Citipark! I'm not 100% sure, but I am leaning towards UCSD because I can live at home and they still have the summer MCAT prep (UCI changed theirs to a Spring MCAT prep). Students at the UCI program do have a better record of getting into med school afterwards than the UCSD program (88% vs 83%), but this doesn't matter too much to me.

Any input on this would be much appreciated!

Congrats Trangility! I'm still waiting for SD's decision as well.

Since UCI is already giving out interviews, is it fair to say that all UCs are rolling admissions based on interviews?

I think it went well, I dont know I think im now over analyzing everything I said in my head and pinning out the things I left out haha...but yea it was intimidating at first, Valerie was really nice...but yes now the waiting game :xf:
They said we should know by the end of the month 🙂

Yep, this anticipation is killing me! Let's keep each other posted on our acceptances 🙄.

Oh, and have you taken the MCAT yet? I'm enrolled for the May 20th MCAT but don't feel as prepared as I should be. Been scoring from 20-27 on the practice CBT's. Meh. Anyone have suggestions whether I should just take this MCAT May 20th, or should I VOID it (but still take it for practice) and wait for a possible acceptance to UCSF on June 1st... 😕

No I haven't taken it yet, I plan to study for it this summer whether or not I get in. I think that if your not as prepared as you think you should be than to wait, hopefully since you had your interview first you will hear earlier, I'm not sure how that works.
I would still take it for practice for sure but you don't want to end up with a score you don't want....Do you have a second choice for post-bacc?

Also this question is for everyone...Is anyone a senior currently and about to graduate in June? It seems from reading the threads that everyone has graduated already or am I wrong?

Hey India. I haven't heard anything from UCI after the interview. Since you are only asking about UCD, does that mean you already got an interview for UCI and heard back?

Thankfully yes, I have heard back from one school and I am very pleased.

Now, is anyone able to offer any insight about pursing a school for an interview?

Good luck all and stay encouraged if you are still waiting to hear back.

I'm a graduating senior!

Hmm.. Well I do have other options, but obviously UCSF is my first choice. I applied to SFSU and Cal State East Bay Postbac for the Fall. I also got offered a job at my research doing GI Surgery and clinical research managing students that are currently in my research position (so basically a promotion but am going to get paid). Pros: Getting paid and published since I'll be the head researcher for the Chief Surgeon in GI at UCI Med Center. The problem with this is that it's not going to improve my GPA (2.89cu & 3.1 sci) and may occupy too much of my time from MCAT studying.

I definitely can score well above 30 if I had the time to sit down and really go over all the content of the MCAT, I've only scraped the surface on most of the sections.

& Yes, I'm a Senior graduating in June. I wish they would tell me prior to May 20... Sigh..

Oh and citipark, did you put UCSF on your FAFSA as undergrad or grad ?
Lastly, would you mind posting your stats citipark? GPA, EC's, LORs, etc.

I'll start:
GPA: 2.89cu & 3.1sci - Bio Major
EC's: Research 2 years; 1 Evo lab for a summer and Fall qtr, the other GI Clinic Research shadowing the Chief (1000+hours), published 3 times, 1 abstract, and 5 presentations.
Volunteered at an under-served clinic (caters to mostly immigrants) doing vitals, shadowing physicians, etc (1000+ hours) since 2006.
Lots of athletic competitions, i.e. half marathons, 10k's, intramural: football, baseball, soccer, water polo, ...
STRONG LOR's, Chief Surgeon UCI, Doc from clinic, Chief Endocrinologist Loma Linda SOM, Bio professor UCI.

Just need to do that dreaded MCAT.. I want a high score, not a subpar. Thinking about moving it to Aug or Sept.. Opinions please...

Still :xf:..

Sounds like we are in the same boat! My app was completed maybe 2-3 weeks before yours and I sent it to the same schools (first time app) but I still haven't heard anything either...

Good luck to all those who have been invited to interview! It is so exciting to read about the progression of things, and of course the tips are very helpful as well. On the other hand, does anyone know of any news that may be useful for those of us who have not heard back yet? I'm still hoping for a miracle!

Yes I am getting very concerned. I see people in this forum getting excepted to schools already and I haven't even got any type of answer, whether it is a no or an interview. I will continue to walk by faith. Hopefully it turns out well. I will keep you posted.

I heard 355 people applied and 50 got interviewed at UCSD. That's a big cut

Congrats Trangility! I'm still waiting for SD's decision as well. I'd go to UCSD's instead of UCI's because

1) you'll save money by being able to live at home

2) you'll have your support system (family and friends) close by. I thought this was particularly important when I moved away for college. I got extremely homesick 🙁 and I think that was one of the biggest factors why my grades suffered

3) from what I heard, UCI changed its MCAT prep to the summer following the postbac year instead of the one before. If this is true, you won't be able to take the MCAT until the end of August that year, which would put you at a huge disadvantage for the coming application cycle. I don't know why UCI would change it to this unless they expect you to take three years off instead of two years.

Nevertheless, UC postbacs are great and it's really up to us to make the most out of it regardless of their statistics.

Again Congrats and good luck to everyone still waiting for interview decisions :xf:

I got in UCI!! Yeyy!! Interview for UCSF next week!!!! So I asked and UCI MCAT program is not exactly as you mentioned, yes the MCAT prep changes from this summer. This summer you will be taking summer school classes. But the MCAT prep starts Fall quarter with weekly sessions on how to improve for verbal, then winter, is for another section and Spring quarter is when the program will focus on MCAT, so technically NO its not going to take you longer to apply than any other program. 🙂
Good Luck everyone!!! Interviews are still coming! dont lose HOPE!

When was the last time someone got an interview invitation? Does everybody think all the invitations are out already? I only got one from UCSD, which I'm not really complaining about.

Hi for those of you who have already interviewed at ucsf this year, what kind of questions did they ask? How many interviewers? I read they only have 8 slots for the 2011 cycle. I have an interview there next week and I'm rather nervous. Any response is appreciated! 🙂

Not to sound like a 'jerk', but do your reading in the discussion we just had. 😛

@Zotectomy...I applied to both as well...i really liked Cal State's Program..classes only Tu/thu would be nice...I'm a graduating senior too 😀...wish they could let us know before June 1st .waiting is killing me.

I put UCSF as graduate on my FAFSA did you?..Dang your stats look very very impressive..I'm sure they liked that you have a lot of clinical experience.🙂

Here are mine (im a transfer student as youve probably seen in previous threads)

GPA: 2.8sci 3.04cum.
EC's: done a variety of community service with diff organizations Ive been a part of (worked at MESA center for 3 years, was active member and president of Latin American student org at my cc, mentor for PUENTE program, research internship with Bridges to bacc. program at SFSU).
At UCSC --service VP of pre-health sorority, did research at UCD for summer, just completed an internship in oakland as an healthy ambassador, volunteered at SC health center for year, shadowing currently
LOR's: Bio professor, Peri-natal coordinator at the clinic I volunteerd for, MESA statewide assis. direct at UC office of the President (all strong I would hope hehe)

Either way stats or no stats we made it this far and like my family and friends have told me that is a great accomplishment 🙂 I shall keep you posted

do we need to bring any documents to the interviews?

My numbers and experiences are pretty much the same as other people above who have been offered interviews but I still haven't heard anything from UCSF, UCD, UCI or UCSD.... I'm assuming they are done giving out interviews at this point?

I interviewed with UCSD a couple weeks ago and just got the good news. Saundra Kirk is a very sweet lady, if you are going to interview with her just remember to relax and make it clear why you really want to be part of the program. I was very nervous during my interview but there was really no reason to as Saundra really tries to make you feel comfortable. I'm excited to start the program and to meet the others who will be at UCSD! Good luck with interviews guys, don't lose hope!

When was your interview date? The first interview with UCSD I believe was April 25th (UCSD was the only interview I got). Mine was May 5th

My interview date was April 28th and I got the news a couple days ago. When I interviewed with Saundra she said they were waiting until more of the reapplicants to apply before choosing interviews or acceptances. UCSD was the only interview I got as well, I was waiting for other interview invitations but they never came but UCSD is one of my top choices so I gladly accepted the offer.

Its weird because when I received my interview invitation I thought that the last date for interviews was April 29th since it was the last date available for me to schedule an interview, but I guess they kept on extending interview dates? Which is good because this hopefully means that they are still giving out interviews for those are waiting for one which to me this still should be since the reapplicant deadline to apply is May 20th correct?

Congrants on UCSD!!!! I'm so happy for you 🙂.... I was wondering whether all of those that have been accepted are re-applicants? I interviewed with UCI and UCSD and haven't heard anything yet...Getting a little worried :/

Correct. In the e-mail I got for the interview invitation, it stated that the interviews lasted from April 25th to May 20. So, yes, I think they are still giving out interviews. It looks like they are accepting students before they finish interviewing everyone which I find interesting

Thank you!! I'm not a re-applicant, I'm a graduating senior so i'll be starting the program a week after I graduate! But i'm not sure if other people are re-applicants. How long ago did you interview with them? I hope you get good news soon 🙂)

Congrats on your acceptance! You're the first person I've heard get into UCSD so far. good luck with it!

You're very welcome! I'm also a graduating senior and interviewed on April 20th. Ms. Kirk is a wonderful person. I really hope I get in. UCSD became my first choice after I interviewed with her. Did you hear by phone?

Hi, do you bring any docs to your interview?, can you share what interview questions you remember being asked? thanks

I have read every post on this thread as well as other threads from previous years, but there is very little information I have gathered regarding the UCSF post bac interview! 🙁 Someone from previous years said that there were two interviewers, one who had read your file, and who didn't, and that it was held at a conference room. And that the questions asked would be typical questions that we can anticipate (why medicine? why this program? tell about yourself) Can someone who has recently interviewed at UCSF please help me update the information regarding the interviewing process? Are there still two interviewers? What other questions did they ask? Do we need to bring anything other than our license (and health insurance) to the interview? Any help is very very much appreciated!

For my interview at UCSD I did not need to bring any documents, but there was a reading test afterwards though. Not sure what other schools require. Some questions that were asked were:
-tell me about your disadvantage background
-plans for the year if you were accepted into the program
-how this program would be different for you than your undergraduate years
-why you want to be a doctor/ what does being a doctor mean to you
-Why do you need to be part of this program

Good luck on your interview!

You are not the only one. I applied to the same schools and I have not received any news regarding an interview or a rejection. :-/

Please read my previous threads, I talk about it on Page 2 I believe. The questions are the same, since one person has not read your file she is just trying to get to know you and she ask the typical questions asked above. You do not need to bring anything else to the interview besides what you mentioned. Also one question that I remember not being so typical was based on my personal situation...she asked because I live so close to UCSF if I would still be interested in housing over the summer at USF

Lastly ..dont be nervous🙂...they are both very nice and are just there to get to know more about you. I personally got to my interview an hour early, but don't go in the office if you get there that early I just waited outside the building and tried to calm down because I was really nervous. Good luck to you and any more questions let me know 🙂

im waiting too.. Don't think im going to count on it though...

We have to keep our head up and keep the faith. Someone once told me that no news is good news. I'm thinking if they absolutely did not want us, then they would have given us a no already. We have to stay encouraged! 🙂

Congrats. Mind sharing when your interview was? It seems like they are shelling out acceptance letters chronologically

CONGRANTS!!!! I'm sure you are very excited to start UCSD!!! I wanted to know whether those that have been accepted are transfer students from community college into a four year university?

Hello guys,

I have a question regarding postbaccs. What if someone does not get accepted to a formal postbacc? What are their options and what steps should they do after the fact? Basically what is there to do if that happens? Curious to know. Thanks people

How would you know if your not accepted? And to answer your question, some schools have "Extension" which is basically like going to back to college and taking courses. For example, UCLA has UCLA Extension in which they offer, I believe, undergrad courses you can take. Sometimes you can enroll into UC's as "non-degree" which usually allows you a year or so to take whatever you want. You should definitely look into other programs though. If your not going to go into a "formal" post-bacc, you will have to do "informal," which basically means you design your own coursework. In formal programs, your coursework is authorized by the advisor. Hope this helps

Interesting. Thanks for the information, at least I know there's other options out there when the formal postbacc seem to not go in your favour. It does help. Now, is financial aide offered for the extension program or informal postbacc?

Extension programs typically do not qualify to offer federal aide, So far as I can tell, your only options are private loans.

Hey MDEDWARD and holmes,

Did you guys hear back yet? My application was completed fairly late (April 14th) because I was waiting on the LORs to arrive and little did I know, it took another week for them to update it on their system. I've been twiddling my fingers and hoping every single phone call is from a California area code haha.

Nothing yet. I'm pretty sure they are done giving out interviews at this point. Oh well, I'll just have to apply to other programs or study do well on the MCAT and apply without postbac.

Still :xf:..

Hi, Do you currently attend UCI or did you attend in the past?
the reason I ask is because from what I had understood regarding the UCI program is that it just involves upper division bio courses, if you have taken them already at UCI, would you get credit twice?

Nothing yet. I'm pretty sure they are done giving out interviews at this point. Oh well, I'll just have to apply to other programs or study do well on the MCAT and apply without postbac.

I'm actually wishing and praying for UC Davis to give me a holler. I haven't heard anything on here about UCD so if anybody knows anything, can you update us?

Don't give up hope. I contacted UCD a couple months ago about my application status and they said that they will continue to give interviews through early June. Now my concern is that they should be giving us an answer about interviews soon right? What I have seen on this forum is that they call you in two weeks in advance for an interview, right?
