Does UCBSO really give an interview to everyone that applies?

I've heard this from a few choices and I was just curious to see if anyone else has heard about it.

nooooo. they give interviews to about 50%. i intervied in 2004, there were ~65-70 people there. my interview year they had already accepted 1/2 the class so really it was ~70 people competing for 30 spots. now they accept less early admit and interview about the same number. your chances are pretty good (bettter then 50%) if you get an interview - good luck to all the future first years🙂

not everyone (they can't physically interview 200 people) but that means no early admit.

FYI, the new admissions procedure includes everyone getting interviewed (started last application cycle) if their stats meets the criteria. It does not mean that everyone that applies will be interviewed; you still have to be invited for an interview. However, not everyone will be interviewed in-person on the specific day because some candidates will be granted phone interviews instead.

Only those in the admission office and committee can give you an idea what the stats are. A good resource is the profile of the 1st year classes --> http://optometry.berkeley.edu/opt_txtpp/admissions/admitprofl.html

The average GPA and OAT scores of accepted students for the past 5 years have relatively stayed the same and the number of applicants has not changed also. It is very likely you’ll be interviewed if your stats fall within that range and the rest of you file is good (letters of recommendation, personal statement).

how does the admissions office determine who gets a phone interview and who gets an in-person interview? is one more favorable than the other, as in the in-person interviews receive more attn and have a better chance? because from what i knew, there was only one interview date on campus for all applicants invited in jan. btw, when do they start inviting people for interviews? after the dec.15 deadline?

A phone interview is usually granted to candidates who are unable to travel to the interview. Usually these candidates are from outside California, or have difficulty financially to come to Berkeley. Phone interviews are also offered to candidates who have very high stats, and the interview scoring may not be a huge factor into that candidate’s acceptance. Again, this is based on what I’ve heard and I do not work in the admissions office so I cannot be certain.

I believe the in-person interview would be more favorable because you have the opportunity to visit the school, take a tour of the schools, speak to other students and your possible future classmates, and you’ll definitely receive more attention compared to a phone interview.

There is only one interview date usually near the beginning of the year. They probably will start inviting candidates for an interview near the end of December or January. Although applications are due December 15th, the admissions office will have gone through most of the completed files before then to start making preliminary decisions on who will be invited.
