helloo, i'm trying to decide between neco and ucbso right now (i have an interview at ucbso in feb). i had an interview at neco and got accepted ... And i've never visited berkeley so i'd like to know what the area is like, how safe the neighborhoods are, etc.

although i did visit the school in boston, i'd like to hear other ppl's feedback on the school, and if anyone's visited ucbso i'd like to hear about that as well. any pros, cons, or comments ????

no time for long pros and cons, but
go to berkeley, obviously.

Haha, second that. NECO is WAY more expensive and is inferior to UCBSO academically, and I don't think there could possibly be an argument against that.

Well you have to be accepted into UCBSO's program first.
Bump this thread in a month or two.

Touche. They cut just as many as they take after the interview.

I am accepted to both schools and trying to decide between the two.
Originally, my first choice was SUNY but when I went to Berkeley for the interview, I was really impressed with the school.
UCBSO is going to give me $5,000 ($2,000 that they give everyone who has been accepted plus $3,000 for being an out-of-stater), but I don't know how much SUNY gives out to students.
I have a family member who lives in NY so living expenses won't be a big problem if I decide to go to NY.
Is UCBSO academically better than SUNY?
What are your thoughts? Any opinions appreciated. Thanks!

Wait, they give everyone $2000? All 4 years?

As far as comparing the academic program of the 2 schools, I think that would be really hard to do.

From what I can remember I think SUNY had slightly higher board pass rates, but they were both far above national average so I don't think there was any significant difference.

Congrats on the acceptance!

Oh no, I think it's just for the 1st year.
It'd be nice if they give $2000 for all 4 years tho..

Yeah, I can't decide. I want to go to both schools.
I love berkeley and everyone around me is telling me to go to UCBSO just because it's "UC Berkeley", but I also want to live in NYC.

Here is an older thread regarding SUNY vs UCB:

Honestly, I'd say SUNY and Berkeley are both top schools. I was always under the perception that SUNY was a better school, probably #1 in the country, but that's just me. Their website also looked incredible.

I'm not sure about tuition, but I do believe SUNY is cheaper, and you have housing with relatives, and being close to family is always a plus. Living in NYC has also been something you seem to show interest in.

I'd say, go for SUNY, but the decision is ultimately your's. I think both schools are top notch and reknowned, so in that case I'd go with the school that will make living through 4 years of expensive, demanding professional school that much easier. And that sounds like SUNY to me.

Both schools are fantastic, well-rounded schools. They both have impeccable academic records and EXTREMELY high board rates (which may or may not be of relevance). I don't know much about UCBSO's clinic, but I know that SUNY's is quite outstanding. Again, I'm not sure about UCBSO, but at SUNY students qualify for in-state tuition after the first year. Both schools are affliated with an undergrad university, but UCBSO has a campus and seems to have more involvement with their undergrad, which could be really nice, IMO.

Assuming the costs and other factors end up being roughly the same, honestly it comes down to a couple things: the prestige of Berkeley's name and where can you see yourself living for the next 4 years.

Does anyone know how much SUNY gives out to the new incoming class students? Do they give some $$ to everyone or do they need to have a good GPA or OAT to get it?
Thanks!

every 1st years get AT LEAST $2000. 2nd 3rd and 4th years get MORE!! I think they give you more as you move along the program. keep in mind this is for every student in good academic standing a maybe a little more for out of state students. not sure how our state & national economic crisis will affect this next year.

Oh, and come to Berkeley!!! You will absolutely love it here!!!!

I'd assume if they didn't bring it up during interview or in your acceptance letter that they aren't offering any $$.

When do you have to make a decision by? Keep us posted!

Both UCBSO and SUNY offer in state tuition after year 1. Scary thing is both schools have really raised their tuiton recently, narrowing the gap between them and private schools, so who knows how much tuition will be in 3 years.

SUNY doesn't raise their tuition every year and this was the first time in 14 years, according to a SUNY student. I was definitely worried about that too.

So... is this still a decision you have to make, or are you going to NECO?
