hey, I am just wondering if you are a med student at pritzker, can you take classes in other departments that are not offered by med school? i know that their econ department is one of the best, if not the best in the country, and as an econ major, i am interested in taking some of econ classes just for kicks if i were to go there for med school. thanks!!

Can I just ask at what point during medical school you think you will have time to sit in on another class? The econ classes are ludicrously demanding. But no one's going to stop you from sitting in on lecture.

Yeah um... I don't know how much time you've spent in medical school, but you will have very little time to do anything other than medical school things.

They also have an amazing art history program...

pritzker in particular is also one of the most classroom time heavy med schools out there

actually, in the spring, we have lots of free time. we are also supposed to do 2 electives then, one of which is usually preparation for the summer research program. There are choices for the other elective but students are allowed to make up their own. I made up my own elective and you can certainly take economics if such madness🙂 appeals to you.

Hey thanks for the reply. So basically, does that mean can take classes that are not offered by the school of medicine? Is this the norm for other med schools too or is this just something that is unique at Prtizker?

Yes. you take classes from the other schools. I'm not sure about other medical schools but the advantage Pritzker has is that the elective time is built into the curriculum for the spring quarter, which is a relatively easy one. Some of us used the free time to watch TV and play sports but you can even take more that one economics class if you are that interested.

I forgot to add that compared to other schools, our whole university, ie, all the various schools, is integrated. The entire university is on one campus and is administratively integrated which make interdisciplinary study easier. Some schools might have one campus for the entire university (most schools don't by the way) but with separate administrations.

Depending on one's interest, it might be a thought to sit in on a b-school class. Check out Richard Thaler on decisionmaking, Jack Gould/Harry Davis (class was co-taught) on creativity in organizations possibly. Highly recommended classes. Many students sat in on the classes taught by nobel prize winners, fewer in Fogel's class as I was told there may be some difficulty understanding him, despite his brilliance. It would be difficult or impossible to register for the b-school classes that are the most popular due to the bidding system, but one could sit in on the courses regardless.

ps I earned a B in the grad level econ class despite my economics major. That stuff is tough and time intensive, albeit interesting.

You sound so naive! You don't just take "econ classes just for kicks" at Chicago. Don't even think about it.
