so, I sent an email to one of the admissions officers at UCI to ask them what's up with my app. I didn't even receive a secondary from them, and I had sent the UC supp back in august...you SDN people know what I'm talking about. I keep complaining about that everytime!!Anyways I get this email from the admissions officer telling me that I will not be receiving a secondary from UCI 😱 I'm so shocked!!!! I mean I know I don't have the best MCAT scores or GPA, but I thought I at least deserved a secondary....I'm not even going to fight it....the school has had so many problems with the college of medicine, that I just applied because I'm from the Orange county area. But anyways, besides all this complaining....HOW RANDOM CAN THIS MED SCHOOL PROCESS BE? I mean I received screened secondaries from schools like stanford and UCLA, which I personally think are much better schools than UCI...but no love from UCI....whatever....they're weak....sorry if I offended those of you who love UCI....no harm intended

UCLA gives secondaries to approximately 55% of everybody who turns in a secondary, UCD about 50%, UCSD is 40%, UCI about 33% and UCSF is 30%. I think that actually doing this is a great service to us in that we don't have to spend more money to apply. It's not like BU or Einstien where they gives secondaries to everyone and also ask for 100$.

maybe, they feel that your caliber is too good for them, and reject u because of that?

it's not unheard of u know?

I heard that UCI is pretty big on rejecting over-qualified applicants. That's what I keep telling myself since I was put on hold.

i have an opinion on UCI. one of my letter writers used to be a big time scientist with the school of medicine at UC Irvine. when i told him that i would be applying to UCI he said, "Irvine?? Irvine shouldn't even have a medical school!" heheehh so think of it like that, my friend.

Any school in CAlifornia is tough, because everyone is attracted to the weather and quality of living. Even if Irvine could be considered a weaker california med school, it's still hard to get accepted than many others around the country. Good liuck with your LA and stanford apps. 🙂

Jalbrekt, I'm interested in finding out where you got this info from? As far as me being too good for them....well I'm flattered, but at least give me some love UCI....rejection pre-secondary is horrible!!! anyways...I'm still waiting for my first interview....I hope it comes soon, because the waiting is killing me!!!!

girl, you keep on posting that statement again and again...if you post it one more time I will slap you silly 😀

I don't even understand what your talking about...personally, I really liked Irvine..again, great environment weather, tuition ultra cheap, and it is a FREAKIN PARTY SCHOOL!!!

Oh my gosh, you pple wouldn't believe it, it is so unheard of from a UC...they have class from 9 to 12, and I asked the guy what do you do afterwards? they were like...we party till we drop...and I asked the student host, what is one good thing about your school, she said the dean invites us to his house twice in a year to party!....

🙄

at first, I was like, this school is a joke, but they all become good physicians, and their exams are "shelf exams" old USMLE exams...so they are prepared really well...I was stunned...I had mix feelings of the school...but don't bash it....

nah, i think i'll bash UCI at will. thanks for your input however. very very informative. i was just trying to make dr. don feel better. i have a friend named don and he wanted to be a doctor once.......

My little bro goes to UCI undergrad and he says the social scene sucks. His main complaint is the ethnic diversity of the student body.

REALLY? are you saying it sucks because there is diversity? or sucks because there is lack of it?

dude that is undergrad though?! undergrad and grad are two different things!!!

Dude...Rajneel had posted that story so many times that I had gone to UCI with a somewhat bitter attitude. I have to tell you though that I was extremely impressed with the school. No, I didn't buy into the "dog and pony" show that many schools put on. You don't have to with UCI...just look at the stats. Their match list is awesome and last year their students scores 2nd in the nation on the boards with an average of 228; 8 of the 92 students scores in the 99+ percentile. The facilities are top notch, and yes, the med. students love to party. Not only does the Dean invite all the students to his place twice a year to party but the officers go to his house to party every month. In addition, every month the dean meets with the students to get feedback and the curriculum is completely dynamic. The research options are endless...

This is a great school. Most of the students live at the beach...I could go on forever. I loved it there. For those of you who haven't seen the school and are making statements based on what others are saying need to go check it out for yourself.

Oh yeah...and the lounge was the best I've seen. Not just a pool table. Not just a fooz-ball table. Not just a ping-pong table...but all three!!! I'd never go to class 😀

you know I found it remarkable that they scored really really high given the fact that they have class from 9 to 12? I guess all that free time goes to studying for the boards 😀

besides that, I heard they get off two months before the USMLE step 1 exam, so they have a **** load more time to study for the exam than everyone else!

rajneel,

You went to UC Davis, right? Just out of curiousity and if you don't mind posting it, who was that letter writer?

Hey Watcha - when did you interview?

Don't you think this type of info. should be published in the MSAR 😀 Is it too late to apply to SUNY Buffalo? OK...I'll start the new thread.

SUNY Buffalo?

ARGH, that school made me puke....it sucked...when I went there I was like, why the #$#$# did I even apply here!!!!!

sorry no offense to anyone, but I absolutely hated that place....

how could you say UCI is a party school!!!???? No way, not even close. Ive partied up there a couple times and thats enuf for me. Going to a social event at the deans house is definetly unique, but other than that Irvine goes dead at night. Newport basically shuts down at night too. No good clubs, raves, or even greek parties. If "partying" at the deans sounds fun, youd probably have fun there. Its depends on the person I guess.

DARWIN:

How do you know that UCI students did superbly on the USMLE's and were getting like 99%?

Bro, there is plenty to do in OC. Newport / Balboa (5 minutes away) is crazy from Thursday to Sunday, and the spots don't close until late. And if you want to hit Sunset, Hollwood is just an hour away. OC doesn't have the sheer number of clubs/bars as San Diego or LA, but one thing is for sure, they are cleaner.

as a person who has lived in OC most of his life...I gotta tell you, OC sucks!!! there's hardly anything to do for fun!!! OC is very conservative and the only way that I'm coming back to OC is to practice medicine in the underserved communities there and/or to live there. Southern Orange County (irvine, mission viejo, etc) is really nice. Good place to raise your children, for those of you married/engaged SDNers,

Darwin where you been man!?

UCI 8 students out of 94 or something got 99+ percentile....not bad..

but...Penn over 30% of the students score 99+ percentile in any given year....

or so they tell us at interviews anyways.

Hey UCLA2000 - I've been around, just not posting too much. Over 30%!!! That's incredible...but then again, I don't anyone would argue that UCI has better quality students than UPenn. Hey, how have things been going? Any word from UCLA, or Davis (he he)? Anyone who chooses UCI over UPenn is out of their mind, in my opinion.

Meddude - Our tour guide mentioned this and during the orientation at the interview the Dean also mentioned it. I couldn't find it written down anywhere, but of all the stats. they'd written down everything coincided with what they were saying...so I don't think they'd just say that and have it not be true. Anyone else there last week and hear the same thing?
